Introductory Information and First Assignment for Employment Law/Spring 2011/Prof. Sachs

The 2 required books for this course are: Willborn, Schwab, Burton & Lester – Employment Law: Cases and Materials, Fourth Edition (2007) and the companion statutory supplement by the same authors: Employment Law: Selected Federal and State Statutes (2007).  Also, the course Syllabus and supplemental readings will be included in a course packet (in electronic form on the course website and as hard copies available at the Copy Center.

The first assignment for Employment Law is:
Adkins v. Children’s Hospital of the District of Columbia (Supp. 1-7)
West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish (Supp. 8-10)
Secretary of Labor v. Lauritzen (13-26)
Egbuna v. Time-Life Libraries, Inc. (Supp. 11-14)

As noted in the syllabus, our first meeting (on Monday, January 24) will proceed on an all-volunteer basis.  Please be prepared to cover the above material during our first class, although we may discuss some of it on Tuesday, January 25.

Berkeley Exchange Program

The Berkeley Exchange Program was designed for the purpose of enhancing the educational opportunities available to law students at both Harvard and Berkeley by providing them with exposure to a different faculty and student body. Each year, the program allows up to five Harvard Law School students to spend their third year studying at Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law. In return, up to five students from Berkeley can spend their third year here at Harvard.

HLS students who wish to be considered for the Exchange Program should submit an application to the Administrative Board via the Dean of Students (send email to dos@law.harvard.edu) by Friday, February 4 at 5pm. The application should be in the form of a letter indicating why you wish to participate in the program. Special attention will be given to academic reasons for wishing to go to Berkeley such as a desire to work with a particular faculty member there, or to take courses not available at Harvard. In any event, the application should include a proposed course of study at Berkeley. Courses at Boalt Hall are listed on their website www.law.berkeley.edu/courses.

HLS IM Basketball Sign-Ups

Sign-ups are now underway for the spring HLS IM Basketball league.   As in past years, there will be A, B, and Co-ed Divisions. Teams will be allowed to have at most 2-non-HLS persons, but these persons must still have a current Harvard affiliation. Games will be played Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights (exact times TBD — all teams will play roughly once a week).
