Prof. Coquillette seeks RA for help in writing bicentennial history of Harvard Law School

RA needed for project on Pharmaceutical Industry Law and Policy Reform

As part of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, this project examines ways to reform the financing and law related to the pharmaceutical industry to promote drug safety and eliminate many of the conflicts of interest that now plague clinical research, the funding of medical education, drug marketing, and other areas that affect public health.

Prof. Marc Rodwin is looking for several law students to help research the following areas:

1. Product liability law and the drugs;

2. Patent policy related to pharmaceuticals, including exclusive marketing rights, pay to delay generic drugs coming to market;

3. Compulsory licensing of patented drugs

4. Ownership/ disclosure of data from clinical research trials;

5. Regulation of prescribing drugs for uses not approved by the FDA

6. Taxation of pharmaceutical firms;

7. Law and economics related to incentives for promotion of drug safety and pharmaco-vigilance

Winter Term Research Strategies and the Use of Human Subjects

Students whose winter term projects will involve research and/or human subjects are strongly urged to attend a session on Friday, October 21 at 12:00 p.m. in Hauser 104. This session will be held with HLS research librarians, a representative from HLS’ technology Risk and Security team, and a representative from the Harvard Committee on the Use of Human Subjects. All students interested in learning more about research guidelines for the use of human subjects are welcome.


JLG Call for Submissions

The Harvard Journal of Law & Gender is currently calling for submissions for its Summer 2012 Symposium issue on trans issues and the law. Preference will be given to pieces that that substantially explore this topic, although all pieces submitted will be considered.  Authors publishing on trans issues in the Summer 2012 issue will be invited to present their work at Harvard Law School on Friday, March 30, 2012.  The Symposium will feature such speakers as Dean Spade, Elizabeth Glazer, Jennifer Levi, Pooja Gehi, and other scholars and practitioners in the field.

The Journal encourages scholarship from throughout the legal and non-legal communities. We accept submissions from professors, practitioners, law students, and others.

Mass Bay CC Conference on DNA and Civil Liberties

MassBay Community College will be holding its “Conference on DNA and Civil Liberties II” at the college’s Wellesley Hills Campus from November 10-12, 2011 featuring the world’s most renowned forensic DNA Scientists:

The highlight of the Conference will be a Debate on Saturday evening, November 12th at 7:00 P.M. (see attached) on whether the forensic methodology “Familial DNA Testing” violates American Civil Liberties. Nationally known proponents and opponents of “Familial DNA Testing” will argue its constitutionality in a debate Moderated by Radio Talk Show Host, Dan Rea. Included among the Debate panelists are former Massachusetts Under Secretary of State for Forensics, John Grossman.

There are 20 complimentary conference passes set aside for Harvard Law School students who are interested in DNA analysis as it relates to law, or , with regard to the Debate, the constitutionality of “Familial DNA Testing”. NYSBA Minority Fellowships, Summer 2012

The New York State Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section and the American Bar Association Section on Environment, Energy, and Resources are once again offering minority fellowships for the summer of 2012.

Since 1992, minority environmental fellowships have been awarded each year for summer employment with governmental environmental agencies and private not-for-profit environmental organizations. The primary objective is to encourage and assist promising minority students to enter the field of environmental law, thereby enhancing diversity in the environmental legal community.

Minority law students are eligible for fellowship consideration if they are enrolled in a law school in New York State, or are permanent New York State residents enrolled in a law school in any other state. For purposes of the fellowship, minority is defined to include: African-American, Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, Alaskan native, and Native American.

The successful applicant will receive a $6,000 stipend for ten weeks of employment in the summer. Placements are the responsibility of the fellowship winner. In the past, placements have been made with such agencies and organizations as Region II of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (New York City), the Environmental Protection Bureau of the New York State Department of Law (New York City), the Natural Resources Defense Council (New York City), Environmental Defense (New York City), and West Side Environmental Defense (Buffalo).

Each of the fellowship recipients is assigned mentors from the environmental bar, who provide guidance and encouragement throughout the term of the Fellowship. The mentors provide a valuable contact for the recipients during and after their law school studies. Additionally, the fellowship recipients are invited to attend a number of bar association meetings and events.

JLSA’s annual trip to Israel offers HLS students a special opportunity to explore the wonders and complexities of the modern state of Israel. The trip generally includes visits to major historical, religious, and cultural sites throughout Israel as well as meetings with senior Israeli officials and thought leaders. This year’s trip is scheduled for March 7 – 18, 2012.

Third Annual National Cultural Heritage Law Moot Court Competition

The DePaul University Moot Court Team and the Lawyers’ Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation would like to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in the Third Annual National Cultural Heritage Law Moot Court Competition in Chicago, Illinois. This year’s competition will be held February 24 – 25, 2012, at the Everett McKinley Dirksen Federal Courthouse, home of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

The Competition has been a great success in the past and judges have included distinguished academics, practitioners, and active judges. This year we are proud to welcome Judge Diane Wood of the Seventh Circuit to our final round judging panel.

Cultural heritage law deals with our most prized possessions and spans beyond national borders; it has become the subject of contentious legal debates and policies. This dynamic and growing legal field deals with the issues that arise as our society comes to appreciate the important symbolic, historical, and emotional role that cultural heritage plays in our lives. It encompasses several areas of law: protection of archeological sites; preservation of historic structures and the built environment; preservation of and respect for both tangible and intangible indigenous cultural heritage; the international market in art works and antiquities; and recovery of stolen art works.

The 2012 problem will address two issues concerning the Theft of Major Artwork Act (18 U.S.C. § 668). The first focuses on Congress’ Article I, Section 8 authority to regulate interstate commerce and the second on statutory interpretation of the Act.

Registration is now open, and applications will be accepted until November 11th. Manfred Lachs International Space Law Moot Court competition

The International Institute of Space Law (IISL) has released the Problem for the 21st Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition in 2012. Also, the Manfred Lachs Trophy has now found a permanent home in the Peace Palace, the seat of the International Court of justice (ICJ).

The student competition is based on a hypothetical space law dispute before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Preliminary competitions will be held between March and June 2012 in North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific. A new African regional round is being planned for 2012. The winning teams of the regional rounds will meet in the World Finals in Naples, Italy in October 2012 during the annual IISL Colloquium on the Law of Outer Space, in the framework of the International Astronautical Congress (IAC). The Final Round is traditionally judged by three judges of the International Court of Justice.

The “Case concerning On-orbit Collision, Non-cooperative Satellite Removal, and Damages”, is available at http://www.iislweb.org/docs/2012problem.pdf.

The 2012 Problem challenges the students to research and debate the legal issues posed by space debris including mitigation and removal measures, and the use of satellites as a tool to combat natural disasters on Earth.

IM Indoor Soccer Registration Open

Registration for the 2011-2012 HLS IM Indoor Season is now open at http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/indoor. Registration will remain open until Tuesday, October 25th at 5PM. Games will start on Saturday, October 29th and play will continue on Saturdays and Sundays until March.
