Volunteer for (Mock) Jury Duty at HLS! (1/19 or 1/20)

Calling all students who are interested in serving as jurors in the mock trials for Harvard Law School (HLS) Winter 2012 Trial Advocacy Workshop! 

Trials will be held Thursday, January 19 and Friday, January 20, from 2:00pm-6:00pm in Suffolk Superior Court and the Moakley Federal Courthouse.  The attorneys in these trials are second and third year law students who would benefit greatly from feedback on their performances.  We are hoping to have 10-15 students per jury to deliberate and to give their judgments on whether the students have convinced them or not in the individual cases.  Please contact Amy Soto at  taw at law.harvard.edu if you are able to serve during one of these afternoons (Thursday 1/19 or Friday 1/20).

Harvard Law School Professor Hal Scott Seeks Research Associates for the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation

Professor Hal S. Scott, Director of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation, is looking for Research Associates who are interested in working for the Committee.  Research Associates work up to 20 hours per week, at $20 per hour, on a variety of topics related to financial regulation.

The membership of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation, an independent and nonpartisan 501(c)(3) research organization, comprises thirty leaders from the investor community, business, finance, law, accounting and academia: http://www.capmktsreg.org/committeemembers.html.  In 2009, the Committee produced a definitive research study on the global financial crisis. National Security Research Opportunities

The HLS National Security Research Committee is looking for students to conduct research for two projects supervised by Professor Jack Goldsmith. One project involves designing a system of accountability for Congress over the Executive branch for killings of US citizens in the war on terrorism. The other project involves researching topics in cybersecurity for a leading national cybersecurity center. There may be potential for either a stipend or pro bono credit (details pending). The Social Security Administration’s Office ofthe General Counsel (OGC) in Boston, Massachusetts is now soliciting applications for potential entry-level positions in our office from recent law school graduates with one to three years experience who are looking for the opportunity to be part of a vital and exciting legal practice that touches the lives of every American. Duties of the position include providing a full range of professional legal services and advice to SSA’s Regional Commissioner and his staff as well as SSA Field Offices throughout New England. Incumbents’ responsibilities will include the preparation of briefs and other pleadings for filing in U.S. District and Circuit Courts, defending final administrative decisions on Social Security disability and SSI claims, and representing management in employment related actions. Students who wish to be considered for the seminar should submit to John Goldberg ( jgoldberg at law.harvard.edu) a 1- or 2-page statement of interest and a CV by 5 p.m. on December 15, 2011.
Paper required. Admission by permission of the instructors.

This workshop will explore the foundations of private law—property, contracts, torts, and restitution. Emphasis will be on theories that offer explanations, justifications, and criticisms of architectural features of these areas of law and of their connections to one another. Sessions will be devoted to paper presentations by outside speakers and to discussions of classic and contemporary works reflecting philosophical, historical, and economic approaches to private law topics.

Holiday Mail for Heroes

The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes sponsor a program called “Holiday Mail for Heroes” which sends cards to American troops stationed overseas during the holiday season.

The Dean of Students Office invites you to write holiday cards to the troops so we can send them over via the Red cross to various international posts.  Cards will be available in the Hark fireside lounge during the exam massage dates and times this week and next, as follows:

Feel free to fill a card out at the tables or pick one up and drop it back off at the Dean of Students Office.  For those cards going to troops through the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign, we need to collect all cards no later than 5pm this Friday, December 9th.  Any cards collected the following week will be sent directly to service members and units known to us by HLS veterans and others.

Card Guidelines:
Every card received will be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working around the country.
Please observe the following guidelines to ensure a quick reviewing process:

  • All cards being sent in for 2011 Holiday Mail For Heroes program should be postmarked no later than Friday, December 9, 2011.
  • Ensure that all cards are signed.
  • Use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member.” Cards addressed to specific individuals can not be delivered through this program.
  • Only cards are being accepted. Do not send letters.
  • Do not include email or home addresses on the cards, as the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships.
  • Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos, as these items will be removed during the reviewing process.
  • We encourage participants to mail as many cards as they are comfortable sending. If you are mailing a large quantity, please bundle the cards and place them in large mailing envelopes or use a flat rate box from the post office. Each card does not need its own envelope, as cards will be removed from all envelopes before distribution.
  • Please refrain from sending holiday cards with glitter. Many of these cards will be delivered to military and veterans medical facilities and the glitter could interfere with a patient’s recovery
