Rules for the 2012 Brown Award of
$10,000 for Excellence in Legal Writing

The Judge John R. Brown Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce the nineteenth annual Brown Award. The Award is in recognition of Excellence in Legal Writing in American Law Schools. Any law student currently enrolled in an accredited law school in the United States seeking a J.D. or LL.B degree is eligible to receive the Award. This year the stipend for the winner is $10,000. The 2011 Award was presented to G. Brinton Lucas of the University of Virginia School of Law for his paper entitled, Structural Exceptionalism and Comparative Constitutional Law.

In order to be considered, four copies of a current legal writing must be submitted to the Foundation c/o Kenneth G. Engerrand, Brown Sims, P.C., Tenth Floor, 1177 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-9007. The article must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a law school faculty member or legal professional other than the author of the paper. Only one paper may be submitted on behalf of any student and only one paper may be sponsored by any faculty member or legal professional. The submission must be postmarked no later than June 4, 2012. The student’s package must contain a separate sheet containing the title of the paper; the name, physical address, telephone number, and email address of the student; and the name, title, physical address, and email address of the student’s sponsor. This year there is no page limitation or restriction on the topic except that the writing must be on a legal subject. The Foundation will appoint a final judging panel consisting of a law school dean, a federal judge, and a law school professor. The Foundation will not return any material submitted to the Foundation. The 2012 recipient of the Brown Award will be notified by October 31, 2012, and listed with the other finalists at the website  www.brownsims.com

Transactional Law Clinics Summer Internships

HARVARD LAW SCHOOL TRANSACTIONAL LAW CLINICS SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Overview.  The Transactional Law Clinics of Harvard Law School is now accepting applications for summer interns.  Summer interns will have direct client contact and engage in actual legal practice in one or more of the TLC practice areas, under the supervision and mentoring of clinical faculty.  TLC works on interesting and complex transactional law matters ranging from for profit and non-profit entity formation, and corporate governance; contract preparation, review, and negotiation; business acquisitions and sales; commercial leasing, real estate transactions, permitting and licensing; entertainment industry contracts; and many other kinds of issues and cases in transactional law areas.   TLC clients consist of persons, companies and organizations from a wide range of backgrounds, commercial activities, or social missions.  Interns will have a diversity of case and client experiences.  No prior experience in TLC legal practice areas is required, as training will be provided; however, students with prior course work, experience, or demonstrated interest in business, non-profit, real estate, entertainment, intellectual property, or contract law are especially encouraged to apply.  For more information about TLC, please visit http://www.law.harvard.edu/academics/clinical/tlc/index.html.

Internship Period and Location. Students interested in working at TLC must firmly commit to work a minimum of 30 hours per week from May 29-July 31.  Interns will generally work on site at the TLC campus location in the Clinical Wing of the Harvard Law School WCC Building.

Funding.  This is an unpaid position, so the student must obtain his/her own Summer Funding.

We are reviewing applications on a rolling basis, but recommend that interested applicants apply soon.  The deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m. ET Monday April 30, 2012.  Applicants who are invited to participate in the TLC internship program must make a firm commitment to the program for the entire duration of the internship period and for the minimum number of weekly hours.

Prof. Cohen Seeks Research Assistant with Expertise in EU Law to work on A Project on Health Care Reimbursement in the EU

As part of a book he is writing on medical tourism, Prof. Cohen is looking for an RA with expertise in EU law to help select materials on case law in the EU and the new European Directive requiring member states  to reimburse patients for medical care received in other member states under certain circumstances.  The RA will collect materials and prepare a comprehensive memo on the subject.  This will involve 20-25 hours of RA time between now and mid-April. If things work out and well and the RA is interested, Prof. Cohen may use him/her for other projects.  If interested email to kburroughs@law.harvard.edu a one paragraph summary of qualification/experience relevant to this specific project, CV, and transcript.
