“Forrest Gump” annoys aging hippies; no one cares

Karma forbid that anyone caricature the 1960s and 70s as an era of
self-indulgent hedonism. But Ty Burr, defending the honor of helpless
hippies everywhere, is here to remind us
of the 10th anniversary of an insipid, hack-art, feel-good movie and
resurrect it from post-Oscar obscurity. Because Forrest is part of some
vast right-wing conspiracy to make us all Think Ignorant, Act Simple.

And “Forrest Gump” does ignore, streamline, and steamroll the past,
most perniciously in its portrayal of the 1960s counterculture and the
people within it. This is what pops out even more clearly on a
10th-anniversary viewing of the film: how absurdly the deck is stacked
against youth in general and antiwar activists — excuse me,
hypocritical, girlfriend-beating sleazebags — in particular. It was
all a terrible mistake, says the film, everything from Vietnam until
the 1980s, and Forrest’s lifelong-love Jenny (Robin Wright Penn) is the
martyr who takes the era’s sins and consequences upon herself, from
drug addiction to death from (sshhh) AIDS.

Ooooh,
pernicious portrayal of hippies as maybe not the idealistic peaceniks
we all thought they were? How shocking. Why don’t you ask that
ex-hippie over there what he thinks of — oops, he just drove away in
his Mercedes.

Ty, is it your readers’ fault that your friends sold out while you
lived out your ideals… as a movie reviewer? No? Then why are you
taking it out on us by rehashing a non-story?

And the bit about Jenny’s martyrdom? That’s the part labeled, “This is a crappy movie. Do not resuscitate.”
