Boston City Council Public Hearing on Bike Czar

23-Nov-04

I attended about an hour of the public hearing at Boston City Hall on the need for a bike czar in Boston. In addition to the usual suspects, representatives from Walk Boston
and Zipcar both testified in favor of creating this new position who
would fight for cyclists from “within the bureaucracy” (such an
appealing way to describe [...]

Expanded bicycle rights on the T

17-Nov-04

From the MassBike listserv:
Today, MassBike won a major victory for MBTA riders when
the agency announced its decision to increase bicycle access on the
subway.
The T’s new policy, which is effective immediately, will
allow bikes on the Red, Orange, and Blue Lines at all times except for
weekday morning rush hours (7:00—10:00 a.m.) and weekday evening rush
hours (4:00—7:00 p.m.).
Additionally, [...]

Frog Pond open for skating

17-Nov-04

Every
winter Boston re-christens the splashing Frog Pond as an outdoor
skating rink. On the way home from work tonight I stumbled on the tail
end of this year’s opening ceremony, replete with skating butterflies
(?) and, of course, a frog. Apparently Mayor Menino was there, too,
though I think most of the kids were more excited to skate than
anything [...]

Joy in Mudsville Senate

28-Oct-04

I guess the Massachusetts Senate can’t help but be giddy about it. They passed the
following resolution this morning by Sen. Jarrett Barrios (never a man to pass up a photo
op):

WHEREAS,
ON OCTOBER 27, 2004, THE BOSTON RED SOX, AGAINST ALL ODDS, WON THE WORLD SERIES
AFTER A RECORD-BREAKING 4 WINS IN A ROW AGAINST THEIR ARCH RIVALS, [...]

MA vs. TX?

21-Oct-04

Red Sox win. Whoopie. Now if only the Astros would win tomorrow
night, the pundits can keep themselves fed for the week by comparing
the Sox to Kerry and the Astros to Bush. You know, because they haven’t
trivialized the election enough yet.

Cars = Evil

06-Oct-04

Last week my friend Scott was hit by a cab in New York. Rachel’s
friend Ansu is in the hospital after being struck in Baltimore. And our
friend Tony’s father was killed crossing the street in London.
I hate the cultural assumption that cars are a perk, a right, of being American. They’re not. They are always harmful, [...]

A great day for biking with camera

17-Sep-04

I almost decided to leave my camera at the office, but boy am I glad I
didn’t. — from fanatical Red Sox fans to flocks of ducks to an
extraordinary rainbow that stretched horizon to horizon, today was a
day I was glad to be outdoors biking home. (See all pictures from this series).

Virgin, er, sucks

15-Sep-04

Yup, that’s our plane… ‘Cosmic Girl’
As
if it’s not embarrassing enough to fly “Virgin Atlantic” on your
honeymoon, our return flight was delayed an excruciating 4 1/2 hours
while we were waiting for a “part.” Considering the huge disparity in
price between their “economy” and “upper class” ticket prices (10:1 to
24:1), I wonder if the “part” they were waiting [...]

Late Broken News

02-Aug-04

Transcript of an online chat with Rob Corddry, a Weymouth native, last week on Boston.com. (Yes, I was on vacation).

jess:
Q: Lately my husband and I are getting all of our news from Daily Show. Do you have favorite news sources?

Rob_Corddry:
Let me tell you all to stop getting your news from The Daily Show. We [...]

Nearsighted Dems crawling around underground

25-Jul-04

Thanks to the out-of-state Dem’s, we now have legible, albeit temporary, T signage. Maybe too legible.
Now, what would it take to get some readable street signs, the Olympics? Hmmm… hey, Romney, get on it!
