Today is National Bike to Work Day and my daughter and I rode the bike to work.
Its also National Bike to Work Week and we rode the bike 4 out of 5 days this week.
We did not plan to be in tune with this national holiday. Its just that the weather is great.
Riding is a bit like camping out. It requires extra ‘gear’, the willingness to be occasionally drenched, and considerable forethought. For example, if it looks like it may rain, I must dismantle my daughter’s padded seat, armrest, and seat belt and bring them inside. If I am riding in the evening, I must carry the bike light and reflectors. When I head out in the morning, I must prepare for weather developments that may happen over the course of the day, such as rain, or temperature drops. So I actually have to ‘think’ alot more when using the bike.
And I must be careful, when grocery shopping, not to buy more than can be safely transported home…
In contrast, diving the car is pretty mindless. One gets in and turns the key.
On the bike, I feel truly awake, on guard, and definitely not on automatic pilot.
