Linguistics

Its one thing to be corrected on your english by a three year old. Its another to be corrected by someone who’s only been speaking english for a year.

My 3 year old daughter started her life speaking Kazakh and switched to English last summer.

Lately she has corrected her grandmother on the pronounication of ‘tomato’. And she has helped me when I’m struggling for a word. For example, last night I was making an action like an elephant, pointing to my nose and saying “trumpet…? what is it???”

“Its a trunk, Mom,” she said.

Amazing how quickly she’s learned the language!!! Another 14/15 years, she’ll be applying to MIT for sure!

My sympathies. I got my Berkeley-literature-degree-granted grammar corrected by Mary Lou’s son, Marty, who is supposedly 17 but will be permanently 5 in my head. Oh the humanity.
