Looking Backward

On the bike, my daughter is not a passive passenger. When she sees something that catches her interest, she rubbernecks until it’s out of sight. I’ve grown used to the slight shift in balance when she does this.

Lately she’s also started telling me about her day. We both have to speak at the tops of our voices in order to be heard over traffic. I wonder if people walking down the street are perplexed to hear, “DID IRENE PLAY MAMA PUPPY DOG, TOO?” and “MMMM, I’M SO GLAD YOU LIKED THE ICE CREAM!”

The bike seat has almost reached it’s year mark. It was a hefty purchase: $175. I keep on doing the math in my head to figure out if I saved money over driving the car. I think I did. It wasn’t a huge differential, but of course there was the health dividend, the quality of life, and other intangibles like just plain old fun.
