Very interesting! I wonder if Rada is trying to work out some personal issues with Mumble. Maybe Mumble represents someone at school, or maybe she is Mumble to some degree (aren't we all?). I'm sure it is frustrating to watch a poor helpless penguin be treated in such a way. I suppose there is a fine line between playing along and letting Rada take the lead, even if someone's feelings get hurt, and stepping in and trying to empower Mumble and make a teachable moment.

It cracks me up to see how parents manage to juggle not only their belongs and their children but also their children's belongings! I had a great laugh driving home last night when I saw a man walking down 3rd Street with his young daughter (I'm guessing 3-4 years old) on his shoulders, holding on tightly to her teddy bear that was all snuggled up and warm in his blankie, and daddy was also carrying under his arm teddy's stroller. I'm assuming that this is a learned talent!

I agree with Mary on #1. That's what my parents always told us and we bought it (even though my family is Jewish and we didn't celebrate Xmas). It wasn't until "Santa" visited a friend of the family's house and handed me a present with the same wrapping paper that I saw in my parents' room that I started to figure it all out. I was probably around 7 years old.

Okay, I'll take a shot at this one...

The Santa's that we see at malls, etc., are actually Santa's helpers 'cause, you see, he can't be everywhere and must spend his time at the North Pole preparing for the big day.

Now, Xmas on the 24th??? Uhm... Santa needs to get a head start because they're predicting a snow storm on Xmas Eve and he certainly wouldn't want to disappoint any of the children that have been soooo good all year.

How's that???

Beautiful post, Molly. I was feeling a similar sense of pride thinking that the first president Sam will be aware of will be a person of color. He won't grow up seeing racial inequalities the way older generations have. A black president, and governor, for that matter, will just be normal for him.

Driving by Lookout farm in Natick shortly after reading this, and inspired by your endorsement, we stopped to see if they had Honey Crisps. Indeed they did. Because of the high cost, we picked up just a few. They were very good, but I'm sticking with Galas. Ordinary, I know, but - what can I say? - I like the taste and texture (though Gala's are prone to mushiness as they age). Anyway, if you're gaga for Honey Crisps, you might be interested to know that over the weekend, I spotted them at Trader Joes and Star Market. At Star, they were on sale for 1.99 #, at least a buck a pound cheaper than they were at Lookout.

I really enjoyed this story. You didn't mention your daughter's age but my 5 year old is going through stuff like that! Since I am a salon owner, it makes it all worse!

PS - I wish we had a dress code!!!

Ugh. I'm glad we have cats. But I have the feeling that Sam will eventually want some sort of rodent or scaly creature in a cage to take care of. I think it's a rite of passage for kids. I grew up with cats and dogs, but still had my share of fish and hamsters.

I vividly remember finding Scooter dead in his Habitrail cage after school one day. I poked him with a pencil and when he didn't move, my friend and I, in tears, called the pet shop to ask if he was sick. (My parents weren't home from work yet.) Good stuff.

Wow that's interesting about the black market turtles. Nathan had new turtles in his classroom, I wonder where they came from...

I had several varieties of rodents as pets when I was a kid, including white feeder mice (I remember buying two with allowance money on an impulse on my way home from school in the 4th grade or so). How many did you get? They like company. They also don't live very long, which has it's plusses and minuses.

Hi Molly - Your BBSS friend here. My son, Kush, is now 4 and he is also pushing the boundaries between dependence and independence. Now I have a new baby (Anika 4 mo) and she'll do the same thing in a few years. How fast they grow...I just hope they still talk to me when they are teenagers! - Heather

Stacy, you're so creative! Oh, what I would do to only have to fill my gas tank once every 3-4 weeks. Though I did go back to taking the highway into work and I do notice a small (very small) difference from when I was taking the back roads.

Hi Stacy,
1. Cool idea!
2. I drive her to this camp because she adores it. Its only two weeks of the summer, the rest is at a camp intown. Fortunately my current employer is flexible about the added commute for those few weeks.
3. So glad that you're not battling the highways!

I feel compelled to comment for a couple of reasons.

1. I think this would make an interesting art project. If you took the red lines from your maps, removed them from the map context, and transposed them on a white piece of paper, and compared your routes over the course of a month or so, that would be pretty neat. And eye opening.

2. How did Rada end up in a camp out in the burbs? Are you going to have to get her there and back every day this summer?

3. This is exactly why I LOVE my new commute. I do still drive, even though my commute it bikeable. The combination of daycare dropoff and me not owning a bike (and being too much of a wimp to ride in traffic) still makes me dependent on my car, but I only need to fill the tank once every three or four weeks, which is great for one who lives in the outer burbs.

Of course, I'm no expert on this kid stuff but how about a compromise? She can walk the rest of the way on her own, but you get a kiss before she heads off!

Isn't it funny, too, how life goes through its cycles? I wouldn't even think of leaving my parents now without giving them a kiss. If it didn't happen, I would know something was very, very wrong!

I love the animism of children. It's like she (or any kid) thinks the pieces have some power and will of their own, that they are active participants in the game and might impact the outcome.

Mostly though I am impressed that the kid loses sometimes. It's much easier to, in the words of C3PO, "let the Wookie win."

My first fish was a betta as well. I was 7. My sister was 4 and had this idea that it needed a bath. So one morning I awoke to a soapy fish bowl and of course a dead fish.

Okay, Molly. I'll confess. I, too, will indulge in a BK Whopper (though, I go with the Jr. Less guilt.)

Another guilty sin? McDonald's. Big Mac. Mmmm....mmmm. Sinful.

I tend to find these foods comforting on really yucky snow days. A few storms ago, after shoveling out at home, we were headed to the MILs to get her out and hubby asked on the way down what I wanted for lunch. Something junky, I responded. Something chunky? he asked. Well, it'll go in junky and stick around chunky but after clearing out two houses of snow, I think its well deserved!

Don't forget, you have a deadbeat friend who can easily arrange to be at home to accept deliveries, and Back Bay scheduling may be easier due to high density business traffic nearby.

But it is a really nice computer, worth the hassle I think. Enjoy!

That is just unbelievable! I had a sort of similar situation when I was waiting for my iMac delivery. I just happened to be home during the day when FedEx delivered my "free" (another story for another day) printer and I asked how they would handle the delivery of the computer itself since on a normal day, no one would be home to sign for it.

They offered to leave it without signature but I wasn't crazy about that idea since, obviously, if I said it was okay and it vanished, I'm sure Apple wasn't going to just send along another!

The delivery lady was a sweetheart. She gave me her cell phone number and when it was ready for delivery, we coordinated for Brian to meet her at a location that they determined was convenient for both of them on the day of the delivery. I don't know if that is normal procedure for them but it sure worked out great for us!

Alas you have missed the North Shore Spirit in Lynn, easily accessible via commuter rail. The team went out of business at the end of the 2007 season.

You'll have no trouble, I'm sure, understanding baseball scoring. The game in general is much simpler than football, for example.

There is a Kids page on the Red Sox web site - not sure whether it has anything good, though.

For the baseball schedule, see http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/ps_07.jsp

The Angels series was on a cable channel. The rest of the Red Sox games are on broadcast TV.

The flow of baseball is such that you may be able to fool a young child into going to bed between innings after the Sox have "finished batting" or perhaps when a pitching change is made. "Josh Beckett is leaving the game to go to bed. Time for you to sleep too."

For live baseball, try the Lowell Spinners. Though they don't have children's pricing, the lowest price reserved seats is only $4.50 and it's a lot closer than Portland. A pair of friendly Canal-ligators roam the park and something silly occurs on the field between each inning. (It's the same silly things every game, so it does get a bit monotonous if you go more than 2 or 3 times a season.)

There's also game area with moon walk bouncy type activities for the kids for about $1 per turn. And twice a year they let people camp in the outfield and show movies on the jumbotron. http://lowellspinners.com/community_scout.shtml

And twice a year they let people camp in the outfield and show movies on the jumbotron. http://lowellspinners.com/community_scout.shtml

And I was just daydreaming the other day, about a trip to Boston and MIT. Does that mean that I shouldn't include you in that?

I'll teach you! I'll teach you! Yay for Rada! Another Red Sox fan!

On a side note - if you ever go up to Maine, you HAVE to bring Rada to a Portland Sea Dogs game at Hadlock field. They're the double-A affiliates to the Boston Red Sox (and no, you don't have to know what that means!). It is far more child friendly than Fenway Park and did I mention how cheap it is? General admission is $6/adult and $3/child. You positively CAN NOT beat it!

When my youngest was little, we got him superman pajamas that he wore as a costume. In fact, he wore them all day, every day for a month, going so far as to wear it under his clothes when he went to school. I actually had to strip him then redress him while he slept in order to get the pajamas clean.

Congratulations on the new career. Mucking out spaces can be very cathartic and renewing. Looks like a bright path before you.

That is so true, Molly! I notice that I drive in with some of the same cars everyday. In fact, one day a complete stranger rolled down his window and asked if I'd been on vacation for the past week cause he had not seen me. I'm sorry but in this day and age, I found that to be VERY creepy.

Love the B.A.C. Been two years in a row and loved both shows. Our six year old liked it too, perhaps not as much as his parents but, well enough. Or was it just the popcorn? We were amazed by the French bike guy and his tiny bikes, to mention one highlight. Hope to go again next year.

Wow cool! Nathan just got a bike as well. His is from the thrift tore, and the funny thing is the training wheels wound costing 3 times more than the bike. He enjoys riding around the basketball court, exclaiming how much faster it is than a tricycle.

It's funny how gender focussed kid's bikes and helmets are. Nathan's feature butch crocodiles and scorpions.

Sounds like someone might have been tired!?!?!?

I love the circus. When I was little, we were at the Ringling Bros circus at the Boston Garden and I was selected from the audience to participate. I got to go "back stage" and see all the clowns then we sat in this "thing" that had huge wheels on each side with a seat in the middle and the clowns wheeled us around the stage floor! It was soooo cool! :-)

We went with Nathan and some friends last summer. He got pretty bored too. I don't get why. No dinosaurs I guess. It also might have been sensory overload. We didn't leave early because we were with friends.

I'm a suburbanite and always have been although I do have happy memories of taking the bus (I don't remember the number) with my Nana to do our "shopping" in Maplewood Square (Malden).

Something changed, though, and now, I'm close to a panic attack if my car is not within walking distance of me. I'm so bad that if I have a meeting across campus, regardless of what else I need to carry, my wallet, car keys and ID card to get out of the garage WILL be with me. Just in case.

P.S. Great story, Ben!

I, too, have a fondness for city busses. True, it's stressful waiting for a late bus in bad weather and cramming onto a standing room only bus during rush hour, but there is something to be said for the social aspects as well. I remember certain bus drivers' personalities and a handful of let's just say "eccentric" passengers.

Now that I live a total suburban lifestyle, I have to say that I enjoy certain aspects about my quiet time in my clean (well, the dirt is at least my own dirt) car, driving the mostly traffic free, pleasant roads. But there will always be a part of this suburbanite who wishes she still lived in the city. And, yes, Medford counts!

You just stirred some amazing memories of my childhood Valentine's Days! I remember we used to make paper "mailboxes" that we'd decorate and put our names on. These would be hung from the side of our desks and at the Valentine's party, we would all distribute Valentine's for each other. Now, I'm wishing I had saved those (hint, hint!). What fun would it be to look back on those today???

I think that's awesome! What a creative way to get those little ones counting. Toothpicks were a wonderful idea but I'll be interested to see how full her classroom is tomorrow. ONE HUNDRED THINGS? That's a lot of things if people don't have toothpicks or the like in their homes!

I love hearing about Rada's "growing up" regardless of the topic so please keep them coming!

I think it's because our lives are just moving at far too fast a pace.

I lost a glove at Kohl's last week but retraced my steps and foud it, too. I was at least figuring that I was glad I noticed one was missing while I was still IN Kohl's where they could have been easily replaced, rather than after I'd gone through the register!

Sam's current favorite toy is an empty orange juice carton. I don't think his imagination is as developed as Rada's since he seems to just want to carry it around the house and chew on it, but what do I know? Maybe he's got an advanced storyline attached to it. It's hard to know what's going on in that little fuzzy coconut sometimes.

Hi Stacy,

Thank you for the suggestion. You're right! The photos need to be bigger. Here is a better one of Rada. I'm also looking into possibility of linking to bigger photos elsewhere on site.

My next plan is to get a camera with short movie capability. I love the clips of Sam.

Hi Molly,

I love reading your posts and seeing the photos. How big Rada has become!

Because I enjoy keeping up with your family, I'd like to make a request. Is there any way for you to either post larger photos or link to larger versions? They're so tiny and it's hard to really see the cute reindeer.

Thanks for considering!

We had a very similar experience in California. Nathan, then lisa then Me, we went like dominoes to a stomach virus. At least our families took turns with the bugs, instead going down all at once. Nathan's been lucky with preschool so far.

Ah, yes. I remember my first year of daycare: getting sick every other week, and with those nasty kid bugs, too.

But after a while you will all become immune; bionic, really.

This vile bug also paid a visit to our house. Starting with me, then Matt, then Sam. On top of the vile bug, we all have bad colds and Sam has a double ear infection Did I mention that we were all healthy two weeks ago before he started daycare?

Stacy, I'm actually trying to be extra sensitive to what I eat as I did put on a few pounds at my last attempt over a year ago. Explain to me then, why am I sitting here eating this bag of gummy bears that I just bought at the Student Center???

Go Mary Go Mary Go Mary Go!! I think I know what it is.... I went through it once, too..... it can be done.... it gets better with time, much much better with time. Do it one day at a time..... it is more important than anything else. At the beginning I felt that I had lost my brain, and that I'd never feel comfortable in my skin.... but I did get it back...I got everything back. I got my old self back.... all of me. But it took a little while... so just hang in there..... keep it simple.

That's just wonderful! If he adjusts as well as Rada has (with the help of her wonderful mom, of course!) then he'll be just fine!

By the way... my New Year's resolution is the same as every other. I'm officially on day 4. Can you guess???

Yikes! I can only imagine that feeling!

I remember learning how to tell time in kindergarten and the cool paper "cuckoo clock" we got to make that mom let me so proudly display on the kitchen wall!

I also remember learning how to spell the work 'look" because the teacher made eyes out of the "o's! I guess it was effective since I remember that oh so many years later!

The only thing I like about this time of year is decorating for fall/halloween and making a scarecrow. I know, I'm a bit old to be still making scarecrows but it's the only good I can find in having to have all these beautiful leaves fall from their trees!

Sadly (in my opion, anyway), it won't be long before you'll be taking Rada to the park to make snow angels and snow men! :-(

Sorry that it hasn't gone as you had hoped/expected. Is making a change where it's still early a possibility? If not, I definitely think you'd be doing the right thing by get as involved as possible. And who knows??? Maybe then you'll see it's not quite as "bad" as it seems from a distance!

Wow. The morning came, my mom just left us and went back home, Niri is still sleeping and I don't know how should I feel. I think I'm a mixture of curiosity, anxiety and fear. She is my first born, my big girl. Her baby spot has been taken by another that now goes to the same safe space that I value and appreciate so much and wished that she could stay so safe there.
I know she'll be fine. I'm not sure about myself. Even thought about getting her the kids' cell phone, so she'll know she can reach me at any time and place, and then decided to try and let go. I so envy you, you seem much more complete with that then I am.
Good Luck Rada! We love you!
Good Luck Molly! lets meet sometime to think about our lost childhood.
Nah, let's meet sometime to have fun.

Molly, you're making me realize how fast this all goes by. I remember vividly you spoon feeding Rada Yo-Baby yogurt in 9-253 a few years ago.

Really, though, it is all so confusing! With all that that sweet little mind has to take in in this world, I don't blame her for wanting them to just be gooses. It's so much easier that way! ;-)

Thanks so much, Tom. I'd be delighted to borrow your M22 to try it out.

Mary and I have also been looking at the Nikon CoolPix L4 or L5. Do you know anything about those models?

Mary's problem with squiggly lines sounds like "night flash" or "slow sync". These are a camera settings, not defects, where the flash goes off to light the foreground properly but the shutter is kept open longer to capture some of the natural light. But there are limitations to when this setting will work well.

Also known as "dragging the shutter", you can see an example of it used well at http://luongophoto.smugmug.com/gallery/1245483/1/58373828

For Molly's camera purchase, I suggest she consider an HP M22. Small, weather-resistant, and inexpensive - plus she can borrow one from me to try it out.

We jsut finished up with our daughter's 9 month treatment for latent TB. Ugg. It really is about the parent remembering it (it actually took us about 9 months 3 weeks to finish because of the days we forgot. But forgetting about 2.2 times a month isn't that bad - and if you do forget occasionally, it really is ok).
My daughter took the medication ok, but please make sure you are also giving her B6 vitamin, as you need to be taking more to make the medicine effective...though I am sure your doctor told you this. ;) We actually had more problems getting our daughter to take the poly-vi-sol than the crushed pill.

I don't have a recommendation either but I purchasesd the Samsung S500 last weekend and promptly returned it after my first attempt to use it. I was in a function hall and the pictures were all orange with squiggly lines going through them.

If you get any good advise, please share!

in any case, there are worse things you could find, like HALF a bug, or this: http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/pottedsnakes.asp

I would have done the same as you or thrown the whole thing out. It's happened to me before. Recently, I cooked up some kale. Sauted with garlic and lemon juice (mmmm!). As I was cooking it, I noticed an inch worm. Who knows? It could have landed in the pot from my kitchen. Then, another. I picked both out and tried to pretend I never saw them. Kale served with dinner. I notice another one, and pick it out but am careful not to tell spouse. I carefully eat the rest of my dinner and quietly throw out the leftovers. I have not bought leafy greens since.

It's a shame really. I'm sure a couple of bugs is much more healthy than the chemical residues from pesticides we injest every day!

Yay! I love when that happens and I hope that it continues to behave well.

I had my car in for an oil change over vacation. A friend of mine is a mechanic at the dealership I go to but I don't insist that he work on my car for such minor things as they are paid according to the work they do. Well, a few days after getting my car back, it was smoking and there was a terrible burning smell from under the hood. So, back to the dealer I went and said friend pulled the car right in for me and determined that the other mechanic failed to tighten the oil filter. My friend, his manager and myself were not at all happy about this. I explained to the manager that I had had the work done over vacation so I wouldn't have to miss work and here I was missing work anyway. He apologized profusely and then handed me his business card with the words "free reconditioning" on the back! They're going to clean my car inside and out so it will look like new!

That made me happy. And my friend promised he'd do all the work on my car from now on!

Hi Yishai,
Thanks so much for dropping by! And just one day after Ido has come into the world, too. Soon you and Ayalet will have two little brains running around the apartment :-)

I believe I stumbled on your blog once; I should go back and visit again.

hi there :)
i feel as almost uninvitedly invading this very private blog...
it's tricky, because they are really really smart, way beyond their five years. it is so much fun to connect with them on that sophisticated level. in fact, being where we are, i have to admit these five year old kids are much smarter than many people with fancy degrees and tenure, and often much more intellectually challenging. spending a day with a very bright kid is, well, you know what it's like.
and then she cries. or is being childish. or behaves like a five year-old. and i have to remind myself (or be reminded) that she is five.
btw, we have beta food and water treatment drops, left over after our very old betta flushed away. while your betta has many names, our betta's name was Many :)
remind me to get those over to you

Very smart move on choosing a "hard to kill" fish. Growing up, the ONLY pet we were allowed were gold fish. Now, wouldn't you think mom and dad would have tired of hearing us cry regularly as those suckers have about a two week life span!?!? :-{
