I've had a few posts on this topic. You may find our name to be more amusing. While I was describing it at a conference, I pointed out that homeowners might _literally_ be buying fiber in the "grass roots" of their yards as they light up their blocks.

Doc Searls then suggested twisting the name to "glass roots" so we call this the glass roots movement.
