I'm back! What an excellent riddle. I DID work it out without Google or Wikipedia, but I did have the advantage of hearing the start made by those brave others in the lecture :) I agree, very impressive that they worked it out so quickly, but the challenge is in explaining why it is so... here goes, if you don't want the answer here, I won't be offended if you delete this comment:

I am red because -

If there were two whites one person would have their hand down.
If you saw a single white then you'd know you were red - there cannot be two whites.
But no one is standing yet, no one is seeing white, all must be red.

It feels good to have worked it out by myself, but have I explained it as best as possible?

Also - I wonder, if in the queen's test one person stood up and said they were red but couldn't explain why, that would make it easier for the others - not a good way to find the most intelligent husband for your daughter... A good way to loose the risk taker.

Something like - we stand on the shoulders of giants.. or should it be 'risk takers'.

Hi Rebeca, all

I am so excited by all this.

2 reasons.

1. I work in a Polytechnic in New Zealand, and some of my work is building awareness and possibilities for open accessible learning in the skills of the vocational training sector down here. CyberOne has given me something more tangible to show.

2. I just watched the first lecture, and man! very stimulating. The last thing I expected to be doing on my Sunday morning when I'm supposed to be tidying the house and back yard was thinking about rhetoric and riddles! Seeing the lecture (isolating the right audio channel, then amplifying it may fix the audio a bit btw), has motivated me to read your notes. Now I am going to stew on the riddle for the day while I do the intended day work. To be sure I will be back.

Is the a university in Vienna that has the model of - learning will be free, exams cost money?

Who knows, you give me access to everything, I can learn and follow along, even participate, and later I may wish to take the 'exam'

Thanks for this, I appreciate how much of a risk it may be perceived as in your place of work. Count yourself lucky that you have enough people around you to at least get something going. Rest assured it is getting noticed.

Regards,
Leigh

Rebecca,

I am finishing up my Masters degree in Education concentrating on Instructional Technology, and I decided to switch my path to law because almost exact same reason what you've just captured in your writing, "We must do more than just be able to model the thought process of others in our heads, we have to learn to be able to express it. To be persuasive we not only have to understand the point of view of the person we wish to persuade, we have to be able to express to her that we understand it." When I used to teach, I always wondered about the quality of my expressions whether they were sufficient enough to be understood. So, I wanted to learn how to evaluate and express my thought process by learning, analyzing, and practicing law. Your Wiki project just blew me away!

This website will be a wonderful motivator for me to learn how all of your class members engage in the class through technology tools (Wiki, video lecture, reading, etc).

I really appreciate your project that is opening up my new world, law.

Thank you.
