Final Project Assignment

Due dates: December 11 (cyber media part) and December 14 (essay part)

Your final project has 4 parts, two very small and two larger. The two smaller parts will help us in constructing a website that aggregates all of our course projects together so that we can promote them in the court of public opinion.

  • The Small Parts. Due date: December 11th
    1. A 100×100 pixel image that represents you and/or your project. This could be a picture of you, a logo that you create for your project, or any other image (to which you own the rights) that represents you or your project.
      • Please name your file: yourlastname.[jpg,gif].
      • Please turn in as an attachment to the Expression of Your Project in a Cyber Medium part of the assignment.
    2. A 250 word (max) description of your project that you think will make a reader want to learn more about it.
      • Naming convention: yourlastname-project-description.[txt,rtf,doc,pdf].
      • Please turn in as an attachment to the Expresion of your Project in a Cyber Medium part of the assignment
  • The Big Parts.
    1. Expression of your project in a cyber medium.
      • Due Date: December 11th.
      • Please turn in by email to nesson@law.harvard.edu and harvard.cyberone@gmail.com
      • Please use the subject: CyberOne Final Project - yourlastname.
      • What you turn in may be just a link.

Choose a cyber medium that we have studied in class (web/wiki/blog, audio podcast/radio, video/video podcast/machinima) in which to express your argument. Make the best case you can for your project issue in your chosen medium using the empathic argument idea from your podcast as a starting point. In all cases, your final project should be self-contained. That is, if you decide to do podcast series, you should also put together a web page that advertises your podcast and gives a way for people to subscribe to it. Similarly, if you do an audio or video piece, you will also need a web page that gives some context and a link to the video. If your project depends on user contribution (as in a wiki, perhaps), you need to generate lots of user participation by the due date. However, you should have clear instructions for users as to how to participate, and you should have sufficient content to draw users to your site. If you are unsure about whether your medium/plan for expression is appropriate, please come to office hours or email us about it–we will be very happy to consult.

    2. Essay Reflecting on the Experience.
      • Due date: December 14th.
      • Word Limits: 1000-1200 words.
      • Naming convention: yourlastname-final-essay.[doc,txt,pdf]

Please write an essay describing what you have done and reflecting on what you have learned for your project and what you have learned in the project and course experience.

Q&A

  • What if I need access to some equipment, for example a video camera, for my project?

Please contact us and let us know what you need. Professor Nesson has one video camera available for student use. You may either use in his office, using the office as a set or arrange to check it out with him for a short period of time. If you want to try a more ambitious video project, you should consider becoming a member of CCTV to use their professional equipment and studio. Both the Berkman Center and the HLS computer lab have video editing stations available. We also have audio recording equipment and various people ready and willing to help you.

  • How can I find some place to host my video/audio/wiki/web site?

For video there are several options. You may host it at BlipTV, YouTube, or on the Berkman Center media server. For audio we can host it on the Berkman Center media server. If you want your own website, you may be surprised to find that you have webspace available to you as a Harvard student where you can host your own site or even install some wiki software. You can also create very nice websites and/or blogs using the HLS blog server at blogs.law.harvard.edu. Rebecca will be happy to help you get set up with whatever solution best suits your project

  • I need to make a web page for my project. How do I do that?

Rebecca will be holding office hours to help people get set up with websites and learn to edit HTML pages on Wednesday, November 15th from 2-4pm in the ground floor study area at Harkness commons. If you cannot attend those office hours, please contact her to schedule another time.

  • What if my question isn’t answered here?

Please email your question to Rebecca and she will answer it and add it to this list
