The purpose of my blog is to address the question can the second life stock market and financial industry flourish with the help of using real world financial applications that already exist in the securities industry of real world financial markets?

It is clear with many present scandals that have occurred in secondlife that there needs to be stricter enforcement in the financial area. Only when new application are being brought forth will more real life financial institutions look at second lifes financial markets as more than a place to disperse information.

The over the Counter markets rules and regulation that are in place in real world aplication seem to be a good application to try for the second life markets. My focus will be on how to adapt the structure for second life and examine how in retrospect if this sturcture were present how recent fraudulent activity could have been prevented.

The Kingdom of Dreams – World History Museum will be a place where Second Life residents and new Second Life users can study their history, discuss current issues, and use what they study in their real world. How to build this space, attract residents and new users, and give an enlightening and exciting experience will be examined.

My empathic argument, presents the possibility of using Second Life or any other Virtual World for delivering education to out of school girls (11-13 yrs old), in rural india, keeping in mind to maintain a good balance between real-world and virtual world instruction. The podcast outlines the challenges involved while describing the basic problem that my final paper attempts to address.

Government of India issued a report on the status of children’s education for the year 2006. It was observed that the enrolment rates for girl children beyond 5th grade declined at the rate of 10% compared to boys. My hypothesis for the causes are based on 3 factors, also substantiated by government statistics,
1) distance of the location of schools providing upper primary education – currently it is more than 5 kms and hence commuting to the school poses a problem. For girls in particular. the distance also presents practical safety.
2) the inadequate number of female teachers at grades beyond 5th grade.
3) absence of separate sanitation facilities for girls.

If these were the causes that resulted in girls dropping out of school, I was curious to find out if employing a strategy of making complementary formats for education available to girls will result in reducing the drop-out rate.

Virtual Education as a Complementary Educational tool – is it possible?

In this audio file, I describe the empathetic argument I will be addressing in my paper. The topic is whether or not art (or graphics) is necessary to the long-term sustainability of a virtual community. The two sides of the argument will be exemplifed by LambdaMOO (the text interface) and Second Life (the graphic interface). In my paper I plan on citing the different roles that art has played in the development of civilization and society in real life and comparing and contrasting its role in virtual life to support my arguments.

At the end of the series, she will ultimately decide that she is against the death penalty although she was pro-death penalty until her husbanc’s murderer was exdecuted.

Check out my podcast here. Note, the podcast is not 4.5 minutes long.

Laptops in the classroom can prevent people from engaging at the premier echelon beloved by professors, and encourages the student not to provide attention to the important issues at hand in the classroom. The problem the technologies of laptops bring with them can shift attention away from the material at hand and towards the material unrelated to the class dialogue and lecture. People are inclined to misuse the freedom to bring a notebook computer with them to class; they use it to check email, shop for Chanukah gifts, and play solitaire and the technology then constructs a vast quandary for the professors and teachers of the world. In addition, the technology of laptops in the classroom evenly builds a superior crisis for the institutions and the students therein because the students are learning less and walking into an icy world more detached from them then a kind, caring professor, which will ingest them if they are not prepared. Only a professor who genuinely cares about the well-being of the students would make this mental note about laptops in the classroom and attempt to save the students from a pitfall of failure in the real world by saying, “no laptops are allowed in class.”

These truths dismantle the ability for someone to see the value of a laptop in class – but the usefulness of a laptop in class does subsist. Even though students play solitaire, mind-sweeper, and use Wikipedia instead of focusing on the important issue of the class, the studentry then learns an important lesson, the lesson of choice. Self-rule and choice go hand in hand with the relationship amid the technology of laptops in the classroom and maturing. Having technology in the classroom without question distracts the student, but simultaneously teaches them that if they do not pay attention and do not engage – they will fail. However, if they do not have the choice to bring their laptops to class, the student might never learn this lesson otherwise. A lesson that says, if I do not pay attention now, I will fail. Could you not use this as a double-edged sword to teach the student about paying attention while raising your standards instead of taking away a choice because of a personal fear of the student failing in the real world? Will they not need to make the choice to engage later in life? Do the students not need to face the real world?

With the great connectivity the technology of laptop in the classroom brings, comes a great responsibility, but that responsibility takes time to mature – and the technology belongs to the student. Therefore, I ask you professor average Joe to set yourself apart, and teach your studentry to become mature by letting them have a choice. If your classroom was a tent professor average Joe shielding the student from the world and allowing them to feel large, and the door was a laptop. Maybe, like Tao Te Ching says, you could “practice inaction, and let people look after themselves. [while allowing them to]. . . hold the door of your tent wide to the firmament.” Nature then, might take a course, revealing how small the students really are and how much the students need to pay attention.

This is a video podcast of a brief interview by an avatar with a real life person (based on MashUp of video files of myself of real TV interviews/commentaries). This is a simple illustration of why laws on virtual properties are becoming increasingly important. In this case, the avatar in this interview could easily become the face of a high profile person or TV personality. As a result, the question arises whether ownership of assets/IP of real life also applies in virtual life? What laws are currently in place and how are they enforced (if any)?

Developing the West End of Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts?

Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts

Growing up in the summers on Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts, the undeveloped western end of the island has been a defining aspect of Poocuohhunkkunnah, its original Wampanoag name meaning ‘land’s end’ or ‘point of departure,’ making this island a lovely, green, quiet, sailing haven. One could walk freely to Cuttyhunk’s ‘West End’ to the Gosnold Monument (marking Bartholomew Gosnold’s landing in 1602) and its saltwater ponds, and also circumnavigate that part of the island, mostly on roads. Its remoteness for me made it ‘native’ Cuttyhunk, and a separate world. Having first come to Cuttyhunk when there were about 135 houses in the mid-1960s, there are now about 190 ‘kitchen dwelling units.’ An undeveloped half of the island means that population density on Cuttyhunk remains relatively low, even in the height of the summer season. For many decades, the owners, the Ss, especially the senior Allen S., a conservationist, kept it that way, for all of Cuttyhunk. And Cuttyhunk residents enjoyed visiting and using the West End in many ways.

When the elder S died, his children inherited the land. The western end of the island, not legally bound by a conservation Trust, became subject to the new intentions of the family. People couldn’t walk, for example, on the outer cliff road any more, as they had done for generations, because the family members saw the West End as their own exclusive, private property. Over time, old man S’s youngest son’s wife, who hadn’t spent much time on Cuttyhunk, saw an opportunity to develop it. Pristine, and within sight of Martha’s Vineyard, Cuttyhunk’s West End potentially is a very lucrative site for developing summer homes. But bound by the legal constraints of the Massachusetts’ Department of Environmental Protection Agency, the obstacles to building were many.

The West End shelters perhaps a third of Cuttyhunk’s water table – particularly under the higher, central part of the island – and is a limited resource of vital importance to the island. Also, the DEP stipulated that homes be built at a distance from a) the West End’s 3 ponds – zoned for commercial shell fishing – and their wet lands, b) from the closed dump, as well as c) from the long serpentine coast line and its eroding cliffs. At some distance from one of the ponds, the West End’s inner, public-access road had historically provided legal right of way to town residents, since at least the 1930s when it was just a track. If the road were moved closer to one of the ponds, it would free up land on its other side on which to build legally, and still not endanger the wet lands.

Given the many Massachusett’s Department of Environmental Protection Agency’s restrictions, the S family saw that there was still much opportunity for development. Many of the Cuttyhunk families who had lived there for many generations believed that people should do what they want with their land – people always had – and that some of the summer people were too intrusive. The younger son’s wife pursued her plan to build, using as much land as she legally could. The S family decided to move the public access road about 20 meters closer toward a West End pond, from where it was, to create more land on which to build legally. They thought that people would forget the road moving, because island memories can be short. As this land and the road were distant from the town, and since people would still have legal road access to the West End ponds, she was respecting the law by avoiding building near wet lands. At first, the houses would be for the S’s personal use, anyway. The Ss moved the road, and increased their land for development.

But many on the island worried about the decline of Cuttyhunk, with the possible development of the West End. What could people on the island who loved a quiet Cuttyhunk, very different from Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, for example, do? Cuttyhunkers set up a vision committee, and over years, meetings were held, plans drawn up, and individuals with varied interests were invited to talk together. (Attempting to plan for the future on Cuttyhunk, with zoning for example, is like herding cats, although limited zoning seems to be coming). And, as a practical matter, Cuttyhunk’s quiet remoteness, meant that the law played an insignificant role there for many years. People did what they wanted to do and no one cared; people on Cuttyhunk liked it this way.

Taking a proactive stance, I decided to make a video to record the road change. I asked a Cuttyhunk friend who knows the history of West End from his own long history there to help. AW first came to Cuttyhunk in 1939, and remembers many aspects of island life from that time vividly. For example, on the West End, he knows where numerous physical markers in the landscape are that shaped the placement of the road.

AW – with his broad New England island accent, overalls, straw brimmed hat, and engineering-oriented mind – and I went out to the West End, and over the noise of a loud golf cart, I asked him questions about the location and history of the old road. Going through the grasses and low trees, we identified landmarks relating to the road; back at our house, we videoed our discussion with a map of the old road. We determined exactly where the old road went, for the court of public opinion and posterity. I submitted this to the Cuttyhunk Historical Society. This video is an argument, a technological-medium containing a rhetorical position, for preserving Cuttyhunk and its West End, in a relatively undeveloped form. As a deterrent to development, this video could also be used as evidence in a court.

The house the Ss started to build near the moved-road remains unfinished some years later, and the youngest son and his wife, don’t come back to Cuttyhunk very much any more. But Cuttyhunkers still can not walk on the outer cliff road, as they used to. And the West End remains much the same as it’s always been.

Listen to the podcast here. Alternatively listen to the under 2.5 minutes version here.
Second life is virtual world software where individuals can create characters called avatars. The avatars can participate in modes of economic development, live music; create independent films and a variety of other fantastic features. The newest feature in Second Life is going to be speech recognition that will allow users to communicate by voice only instead of the traditional chat via typing. This new feature is another example of how Second life keeps a leading edge over its competitors and continues to be a leader amongst virtual software producers.

Second life is such a leader in the virtual world that Harvard Law School and Harvard Extension School have created a joint venture virtual reality learning experience using Second Life. Second Life has also allowed those who could not do otherwise things that were too costly or bound by society to allow them to be truly free. Some call Second Life liberation from the norm. The best example, an avatar named Wilde Cunningham who is actually a group of people acting as one. “Wilde is not the avatar of one, but nine people, all suffering from cerebral palsy and communicating/interacting with Second Life through the assistance of a “mascot” — a person who interprets what they say, types it for them into the Second Life chat box, and builds whatever the people behind Wilde dream up.”

It is the absolute buzz around this product which makes it difficult to see the discrimination and lack of choice brought forth by Second Life with the new voice integration. The new voice integration does not allow the avatar the choice to turn off the voice option and rely on simple text.

This buzz does not allow linden labs to stop and think what about the people who came to second life to experience another world. Second Life is another world where text was the preferred form of communication, and not voice. What about the people who are shy, or cannot talk, who have throat cancer and cannot speak. These people flocked to second life and supported it from day one. These are the people who are being ignored and their choice to experience life in another way is just be taken from them.

Could you imagine a class at Harvard taught in Second Life with people who cannot be quiet or have music playing in the background, like most do, when in a virtual world. What happens when you cannot turn the voice off?

So I ask you to give users the choice to simply turn on, or turn off the voice feature and not force them to do your bidding.
