I’ve had a similar experience with my 80+ parents. My dad, however has surprised us by diving into the digital age. My mom, however is honestly afraid of the computer. She would love to have access to email and the internet, but she is fearful she will break the computer.

André, I will be following your stories too! I am writing from Chile and I am in charge of BiblioRedes, a national network that promotes digital inclusion through public libraries. The questions that will drive your post are the same that I am trying to answer in my blog.

It might be interesting to contrast your 9-year-old cousin in Brazil, with my homeschooled son in New York. Since he has lots of time, and plenty of digital resources, he is quickly becoming exceedingly tech-savvy. However, this reflects our personal interests. None of his peers are surfing the Internet, sending Emails, or maintaining a blog.

Even among my 12-year-old daughter's peers, it's unusual to be an Internet producer. Mostly, the younger Digital Natives seem to be consumers, rather than producers. They watch You Tube, play online games (Runescape, Neopets,Webkinz), and chat with IM buddies.

I'll be looking forward to your stories!
