I fall into the late bloomer category so the news of Geocities did not effect me in the least bit. My first site in 2007 was a wordpress blog that I still update today.

Thank you for your post. It brings back fond memories of "yesteryear" when geocities is hot like pancakes. At those times, Geocities was on of the first to provide such free services. You were also right that the shut down will eradicate many long-forgotten websites (admittedly, I was on of those). Owning a website is owning a piece of "real estate" in the cyberspace. The difference is that with a free web site, you don't own it and once it got shut down, it's gone for good.

I tried to use geocities 8 years ago, but I didn't really like it. Most of sites on geoities now do not have any real value or important content.

Well, for me, as a late-bloomer (who just started blogging/maintaining a site in 2005) I don't have any good memories with Geocities. I used Blogger and Wordpress.com for my first sites. So, when I heard Geocities shutting down, I said to myself, "Finally."
