Dave Nelson – Uncle Sam Wants YOU

ø

Dave Nelson(s) versus the TSA. The Daily Show recently aired a fantastic segment about the nation’s many Dave Nelsons, who find themselves systematically harassed every time they board an aircraft because some computer, somwhere, has identified Dave (or possibly D. or David) Nelson as an alias that was used, or might be used, by some terrorist, somewhere. The segment is laugh-out-lod funny and awfully disturbing.10MB QuickTime Link

Jobs For John Reality Tour

1

John got laid off last week.  So he decided to track down the
Bush economic team, on a bus tour through Wisconsin and Minnesota
this week touting Bush’s tax cut and its prosperous economic effects.
and ask them what they were doing about the 900,000 jobs lost since March
1st, in a self-styled
"Reality Tour". Homespun hilarity results.

"The back of my mind is buzzing–am I about to have an accidental conversation
with Secretary John Snow in the drive-thru of a Culvers in Wausau, Wisconsin?!
Is this happenning completely by luck and because the drive-thru cashier
knows me on a first name basis?"

A Year of Living Dangerously

ø

Those of us who earn our livings in the classroom certainly remember our first real teaching experience. Sometimes its good to be reminded of what it was like when every move was a new one, and every day was a surprize.

Brendan Halpin is a first year teacher in a Boston area high school. As such, he gets the rookie assignments. “Having three level-three, or bottom-track, classes is pretty standard practice for new teachers — everybody foists all the classes they don’t want onto the new guy.”

A well-written and funny review in the Boston Globe Magazine

North Korean Turnaround Explained

ø

Steven Den Beste has written a fascinating analysis of the current situation in Korea, giving the historical context and then explaining Friday’s complete turnaround – from demanding bilateral talks with the US to accepting six-sided talks with the Chinese, South Koreans, Japanese and Russians also invited. You have to read the whole article, but basically the Chinese did it.

“North Korea shoved all their chips into the middle of the table. But they’re playing poker with a Texan. He didn’t panic. But I think someone else did. I think that the Chinese finally reached the breaking point.”

The Volokh Conspiracy entry where I found the link has some tart commentary on the inability of the mainstream press to competently cover stories like this….

Hispanic Voters Don’t Fit Mold

ø

Now the largest minority in the United States, Hispanics will play a crucial role in the 2004 elections. Will they follow the lead of previous waves of immigrants and mostly migrate to the Dems? According to a recent New York Times poll, the answer is a qualified yes….

“Hispanics view the Democratic Party as better able than the Republican Party to manage the economy, create jobs and improve the nation’s public school system, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll. But they admire President Bush and have embraced positions — from supporting tax cuts to opposing abortion and some gay rights — that have typically been identified with Republicans.”
