Global Race Against Sobig Makes Progress

ø

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – The FBI subpoenaed an Arizona Internet service provider to trace the culprit behind a fast-spreading e-mail virus that security experts said may have first been posted to an adult pictures Internet site.

So far, as many as 100,000 computers have been infected with Sobig.F, which in turn has spewed “millions upon millions of infected e-mails” to other Internet users, Kuo added.

The Art of the August Flop

ø

About a month ago, I almost embarrassed myself severely
in this space. The Red Sox were only a half-game behind the Yankees in
the American League East, and three games in front of Oakland for the
wild card slot, and I was starting to organize my emotional life around
their games. I checked the schedule before I made appointments, and come
game time I was hanging on every pitch.

I almost came out and told you about the little voice inside my head
whispering insistently that, finally, this was the year. Almost went
on the record
as saying the Yanks were going down this time, that I had once again,
like a thrice times three times loser in love, fallen for this
years edition of the Olde Towne Team, and that I realized the time had
come to rise above the shards of my oft-broken baseball heart and find
the courage to love again.

Thank god I was too lazy or gun-shy to get around to it.
Today, with the Sox a solid seven behind the Yanks and fading fast, I can
see clearly what a pathetic sap I almost was. The Sox, who have made the

an
art form, are at it again. This week they’ve dragged their sorry asses
back to Fenway to torture us some more….

Bride arrested for wedding night violence

A Connecticut bride was arrested at her reception after she allegedly
threw pieces of wedding cake at staff for closing the bar early.

Adrienne Samen, 18, was arrested after police were called to a restaurant
in South Windsor, Connecticut.
She allegedly also threw vases. She then left the restaurant, and was
found by police walking down the road in her wedding dress.

While being taken into custody, police said she kicked the door and window
of a police car and tried to bite an officer.

Fried French Toll Tops Ten Thousand

ø

10,000 French
Fried, People Blame Government, Government Blames People

What the heck is going on in France? The latest officially acknoledged
death toll in this month’s heat wave is 10,000! Meanwhile, in Southern
neighbor Spain, where the temperatures were even higher than in France,
there were only 40 deaths and in Germany 38, although Portugal and Italy are
also reporting significant numbers.

Now, the French government, responding to
intense criticsm from newspapers, opposition parties and public opinion,
has blasted back at the public itself, saying most of the dead were elderly
and infirm
citizens abandoned in their apartments while family members left town
on traditional August vacations. Quite unseemly, but terribly French.

“Many fragile people died alone in their homes. These
dramas again shed light on the solitude of many of our aged or handicapped
citizens,” said Chirac.

France’s medical system is widely regarded as one of the world’s best.
But some health workers said it fell short in August because of laws
restricting France’s workweek to 35 hours, worsening staff shortages.

Lydon and Winer Track Joemobile

ø

Intrepid bloggers and dynamic
duo Dave Winer and Christopher
Lydon
have been sighted in New Hampshire, shadowing the candidates
and blogging the results. Chris will be featuring audio interviews on his
site Christopher Lydon Interviews.
This photo, of the car-toonish Joemobile, is from Dave’s
latest report.
Too bad there’s no video of the tire-changing episode
– I bet it was better than Abbot and Costello. They promise more road trips
in the weeks to come.
