2005. U.N. Security Council members said they would look favorably
on Haiti’s request for more peacekeeping police as they wrapped up
a four-day visit Saturday marked by violence in the streets of the
capital.
There is something iconic about a lone human being
(more so if it is a child) standing up to a monstrous metal tank or
armored personnel
carrier. In this case, of course, the child is not confronting the vehicle
(a la Tiananmen Square), merely observing it, but the impact of the
image is similar. We wonder what the poor Peruvians were thinking….
Meanwhile, a Massachusetts legislator has worked out a wacky plan to bring the warring parties to a powwow on bucolic Cape Cod, to iron out their differences. Tell ‘em to stay off of Route 3 if they want to avoid rage and frustration….
