Two
interesting stories appeared in this morning’s Boston Globe. It
is mute testimony to our busy, busy lifestyle these days - teaching overload,
filial crises, managing the web-end of a major international conference
- that we are only now able to get together a posting.
First, an article
about Google open-sourcing their propriatary
mapping routines, so we could, for example, create a find-a-spliff service,
where just by entering a zip code, well, you get the idea….
Hacking Google Maps just went legitimate.
When the online information search giant launched a feature in February
letting Web surfers pull up maps and satellite images of virtually any
neighborhood in America, hackers quickly found the Google service made
it possible to present data in cartographic format. Unlike existing services
from Time Warner Inc.’s MapQuest.com and Yahoo Inc. that are limited
to presenting information authorized by the portal — like locations
of pizza shops or bank machines — Google Maps let people plug in their
own data.
The
other story, we are sure, has already been noted
by Steve Garfield,
our favorite video-blogger. Look for his work
soon on New England Cable News, which has launched an open-submission
broadcast video blogger’s digest. Look for a review in this space soon…
New England Cable News viewers will get their own
shot at becoming broadcast journalists on July 15, when the news network
debuts
”Video New England," a website feature that allows viewers
to upload digital video that might then be posted on the website
or broadcast on
the network.
”It’s taking blogging to the next step," said Steven Safran,
director of digital media for NECN.
Video New England joins a number of other ”citizen journalism" projects,
which allow viewers to contribute content, already in development nationwide.
