Just when we thought he was laying low,
Hugo Chavez pops up on Nightline:
WASHINGTON Sep 16, 2005 – Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez said Friday night he has documentary evidence that the
United
States plans to invade his country. Chavez, interviewed on ABC’s "Nightline," said
the plan is called "Balboa" and involves aircraft carriers
and planes.
from CNN
Is he being paranoid? Why would he think the United
States is planning to invade Venezuela? Could it have anything to do
with his country’s vast oil reserves? His close friendship with
Fidel Castro? President Monroe’s grand tradition of invading left-leaning
democracies in Latin America? Any one of the above would have us worried,
were we Hugo, but all three together make the land of Polar beer an almost
irresistible target.
Despite all the nasty things he is saying about us,
Hugo keeps selling us his oil. Despite all the dire denunciations
of the administration, we keep buying it. How much longer this inherently
unstable situation can be maintained is anybody’s guess. It doesn’t take a genius to see that when the flow stops, Hugo’s prediction of $100 oil will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
