[Appfest] The Apps

Appfest | Apps | Agenda | Livestream | Storify

In addition to publicly posting their code on GitHub, Appfest participants were asked to share some background information about the apps and app ideas that they produced during the first DPLA Appfest hackathon, which took place on November 8-9, 2012 at the Chattanooga Public Library 4th Floor in Chattanooga, TN.

###

Group/App Name: Drupal Integration
Group member(s): Nick Ruest
What does your app do?: “Well, it isn’t an app. It is a documented workflow of existing Drupal modules to solve the problem.”

Group/App Name: Team Orbut / Follow That Cab!
Group member(s): DJ Trischler, Jason Griffey, Ranti Junus, Ross Singer, Esther Verreau
What does your app do?: “Currently: Allow for users to easily design a query and have it auto-update on a regular basis. Future: report out to user-designated functions such as email, twitter, Tumblr, etc.; multiple queries; save the queries; curated collections/sites.”

Group/App Name: Single submission (done while working on geodata group project)
Group member(s): Misty De Meo
What does your app do?: “Ruby library to access the DPLA API. A small commandline tool for accessing the API grew out of it as well.”

###

Group/App Name: Catalog the Whole Earth
Group member(s): Jeff Goldenson, Jessica Yurkofsky
What does your app do?: “It allows anyone to catalog the world around them really easily. They email a picture of whatever they want to catalog to the webapp, and then log online to edit metadata and submit. In the future we’d like to make the metadata entering process a little more flexible / open-ended while still being user-friendly. We’d also like to explore ways of displaying collections.”

###

Group/App Name: Cuttr
Group member(s): Cecily Walker, Jessica Keyes, Andromeda Yelton, Nandhita Kumar, Ashley K. Worley
What does your app do?: “Crowdsourced question and answer service. The service allows users to ask and answer questions, vote on relevance of questions, and earn reputation points based on answers.”

###

Group/App Name: DPLA PHP access class
Group member(s): John Blyberg
What does your app do?: “It’s a very basic proof-of-concept PHP class that you can call in any application to integrate DPLA search results and data. Included is a sample web interface that does some *very* rudimentary search and display of results.”

###

Group/App Name: DPLA Map
Group member(s): Ed Summers
What does your app do?: “It uses the geo-location features in modern web browsers to see where you are and uses the DPLA API and Google Maps to show you things that are about the area you are in. I think at this stage it is mainly a good sniff test for the geo data that the DPLA API makes available.”

###

Group/App Name: What Is Where Geocode App
Group member(s): David Riordan, Mark Klein, Andromeda Yelton, Misty De Meo, Peter Murray, Aaron Schmidt, Josh Hadro, Crystal Kile
What does your app do?: “It takes records in the DPLA with Latitude and Longitude data, and puts them on a browsable map. Future development: links to digital files, make map searchable, a lot more data set work, better image thumbnail generation, lots more. Additionally, took all geospatial records with lat + longitude coordinates, and mapped them to Open Street Map data that can be used to power additional search features. Down the road: instead of thumbnail, feature embedded preview of digital files themselves — i.e., browse first ten pages of a document, etc.
Our limitations: (1) Limited data set to 600 records; (2) Couldn’t find programmatic stable link to digital files; (3) Couldn’t scrape thumbnails for every record; and (4) Data set is inconsistent?”.

###

Group/App Name: BiblioGrapher
Group member(s): Summer Leinart, Jeremy Throne, Matthew Battles, Yanni Loukissas, Joshua Cash, Jessica Donaldson, Jim Reece, Cesar Garza
What does your app do?: “Allows the end-user to connect with DPLA content through the visualization of metadata.”

###

Group/App Name: DPLA plus
Group member(s): Justin Clark, Dustin Hysinger, April Mitchell, James Staub, Becky Yoose
What does your app do?: “Using algorithms, identify possible duplicate and similar items compared to other items in DPLA. We envision DPLA plus performing both de-duplication of records for library staff (negative similarity) and item recommendations for library users (positive similarity).”

###

Group/App Name: Drupal Module for DPLA
Group member(s): Lee Walker
What does your app do?: “Allow library Drupal users to download the module and play with DPLA”
