Workstream conveners are responsible for the recruitment of a broad range of workstream members and the identification of expert participants for DPLA activities over the next two years.

Marguerite Avery

Senior Acquisitions Editor, MIT Press
Marguerite Avery is a senior acquisitions editor at The MIT Press, where she acquires books in the subject areas of Science, Technology, & Society (STS), Communications, Library and Information Science, Internet Studies, and Information Policy. She is currently focused on the broad themes of infrastructure and mobility. She’s also very interested in new models of scholarly communication and access. She has a MLIS from Simmons.

Rich Cherry

Director of the Balboa Park Online Collaborative (BPOC)
Rich is the Director of the Balboa Park Online Collaborative (BPOC), a technology consortium of 27 cultural organizations in San Diego. He previously held senior positions at the Skirball Cultural Center, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. He also serves as co-chair for the Museum and the Web Conference, on the AAM National Program Committee and on the WebWise program committee. He was a founding member of Steve: The Museum Social Tagging Project, Chair of the Technology Committee for AMICO and was a board member of the Museum Computer Network. At both the Guggenheim and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery he was responsible for the library and archives and for getting digital collections online. At BPOC he has brought museums and archives together digitize collections and to build a digital commons with special tools for educational access to be populated with hundreds of thousands of images from Art, Science, Sports, Transportation and Children’s museums. The BPOC commons will be launching next spring.

Susan Chun

Independent researcher and consultant
Susan Chun is a researcher and museum consultant. She leads national collaborations in the culture and arts community including Steve.Museum and Project Audience and researches, writes, and teaches on museum publishing, open content initiatives, information management and cataloguing, and search and access strategies. She has recently been awarded a Smithsonian Fellowship in Museum Practice to study the potential applications of information visualization in museums.

Jill Cousins

Executive Director, Europeana Foundation
Jill Cousins is the Executive Director of the Europeana Foundation, responsible for and Director of The European Library. She has many years experience in web publishing, which are now being applied to the libraries and the cultural heritage arenas. Her past experience includes the commercial publishing world as European Business Development Director of VNU New Media and scholarly publishing with Blackwell Publishing running their online journals service. Prior to publishing she had a variety of marketing and research careers in the information field. These ranged from being the Marketing and Event Director for Learned Information (Online Information) to managing her own research company, First Contact. All of which is very deviant from her first career as a Middle Eastern Map Researcher for the Ministry of Defense. Jill holds a Ph.D in Geography on Sixteenth Century Arabic and Turkish Sea-charts.

Robin Dale

Director of Digital & Preservation Services / LYRASIS
Robin L. Dale has extensive experience working with the cultural heritage community. After years working primarily with academic and national libraries, museums & archives on digitization & digital preservation, Robin was an Associate University Librarian at UCSC Libraries before moving to LYRASIS. Currently, she directs activities such as educational, legal, contractual, and preservation issues for member institutions, including the 160 that participate in the Mass Digitization Collaborative.

Glen Hoptman

Executive Producer, “Dinner Party with History”
Glen Hoptman is an award-winning interactive media designer working with museums, publishers, government agencies and a host of learning institutions. He is the Series Creator/Executive Producer of “Dinner Party with History,” a transmedia interpretation of the history of ideas. In 1985 he established the National Demonstration Laboratory for Interactive Educational Technologies at the Smithsonian as a research and demonstration center to explore new approaches to knowledge representation.


Bob Horton

Associate Deputy Director for Library Services, IMLS
As the IMLS Associate Deputy Director for Library Services, Robert Horton is responsible for the management of the discretionary grant programs in the Office of Library Services. Horton has most recently served as state archivist and director of the library, publications, and collections division at the Minnesota Historical Society. He studied history at Brown and Yale, then started his archival career at the State Archives of Indiana. Among other activities, he is on the advisory boards of the College of St. Catherine’s Library and Information School; and the Legacy Tobacco Document Library at the University of California San Francisco.

Betsy Kruger

Head, Digital Content Creation, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Betsy Kruger has been the head of the Digital Content Creation Unit at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library since 2006. She oversees the Library’s large scale digitization initiatives with the Open Content Alliance and the CIC Google Book Project, as well as an extensive in-house digitization program that focuses on making the UIUC Library’s special collections openly accessible to the public.

Dwight McInvaill

Dwight McInvaillDirector of the Georgetown County Library (South Carolina)
Dwight McInvaill serves as South Carolina’s Georgetown County Library Director. In 2007, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation featured his library in an innovation video. In 2008, First Lady Laura Bush gave his library a National Medal for Library Service. In 2009, the Carnegie Foundation and New York Times presented him with an “I Love My Librarian Award.” He serves currently on the Association for Rural and Small Libraries Board. He believes in the power of libraries to transform lives.

Stephen Rhind-Tutt

President, Alexander Street Press, LLC
Stephen Rhind-Tutt has 23 years of experience in electronic publishing with a number of different companies, including SilverPlatter Information, Information Access Company (now Gale), and Chadwyck-Healey. In 2000 he co-founded Alexander Street Press, where he’s been responsible for the creation of more than 80 products including the first streaming video collections specifically created for libraries.

James Shulman

President, ARTstor
James Shulman is the President of ARTstor – a non-profit that provides over 1,300,000 images, software, and services to over 1,350 educational institutions. He worked at the Mellon Foundation from 1994-2001 prior to starting ARTstor with Mellon colleagues. Two of his articles were published recently: in a collection on The Ethics of Philanthropy by Oxford (on the creation of new non-profits) and by the Stanford Social Innovation Review (on bringing innovation to innovation-resistant institutions).

Ronald E. Wheeler

Director of the Law Library and Associate Professor of Law/University of San Francisco School of Law
Ronald Wheeler serves as Director of the Dorraine Zief Law Library and Assocaite Professor of Law at the Dorraine Zief Law Library at the University of San Francisco School of Law. He has over a decade of academic law library experience having worked throughout U.S. Wheeler’s scholarship focus on legal research instruction, law library management, and the law library’s role in legal academe. He is a member of the Executive Board of the American Association of Law Libraries.

Jeremy York

Project Librarian/HathiTrust
Jeremy York has been the project librarian for HathiTrust since July 2008. His primary duties include project coordination among the partnership, maintenance of HathiTrust’s informational web site, and activities surrounding new partners and partnership contracts. Jeremy received a bachelor’s degree in history from Emory University and a Master of Information Science from the University of Michigan, with a specialization in archives and records management.
