Workstream conveners are responsible for the recruitment of a broad range of workstream members and the identification of expert participants for DPLA activities over the next two years.

Stephen Abram

Gale/Cengage
Stephen Abram, MLS, is Past-President 2008 of SLA and the past-President of the Ontario Library Association and the Canadian Library Association. He received the 2011 CLA Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award in June 2011. He is the Vice President for Strategic Partnerships and Markets for Cengage Learning (Gale). He was Publisher Electronic Information at Thomson after managing several libraries.  Stephen has been listed by Library Journal as one of their first “Movers and Shakers” the ‘key’ people influencing the future of libraries and librarianship. received the AIIP roger Summit Award in 2011 and was awarded SLA’s John Cotton Dana Award as well as being a Fellow of the SLA. He was Canadian Special Librarian of the Year and Alumni of the Year for the Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto where he received the 2010 Outstanding Teaching Award. He speaks internationally on innovation and success in libraries. His columns appear in Information Outlook and Internet @ Schools, as well as authoring Stephen’s Lighthouse, a popular blog for libraries and librarianship. He is the author of ALA Editions’ bestselling Out Front with Stephen Abram.

Christina Borgman

Christine L. Borgman is Professor and Presidential Chair in Information Studies at UCLA. She is the author of more than 200 publications in the fields of information studies, computer science, and communication. Both of her sole-authored monographs, Scholarship in the Digital Age: Information, Infrastructure, and the Internet (MIT Press, 2007) and From Gutenberg to the Global Information Infrastructure: Access to Information in a Networked World (MIT Press, 2000), have won the Best Information Science Book of the Year award from the American Society for Information Science and Technology. She is a lead investigator for the Center for Embedded Networked Systems (CENS), a National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center, where she conducts data practices research. Current collaborations include Monitoring, Modeling, and Memory and the Data Conservancy, both funded by the National Science Foundation, and The Transformation of Knowledge, Culture, and Practice in Data-Driven Science: A Knowledge Infrastructures Perspective, funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and previously served on the U.S. National Academies’ Board on Research Data and Information and the U.S. National CODATA. In 2011, Prof. Borgman received both the Paul Evan Peters Award from the Coalition for Networked Information, Association for Research Libraries, and EDUCAUSE, and the Research in Information Science Award from the American Association of Information Science and Technology.

Peter Brantley

Peter Brantley is the Director of the BookServer Project at the Internet Archive, and editor of the Reading 2.0 mailing list. He is also co-founder with Gary Reback of the Open Book Alliance. He was previously director of the Digital Library Federation. He is a member of the ALA ebook TF.

Martín Gómez

Vice Dean, Libraries at the University of Southern California
In April 2012, Martín J. Gómez was appointed Vice Dean of the Libraries at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.  As Vice Dean, his responsibilities include overseeing the management of public services, collections and operations of USC’s 22 campus libraries. Prior to his appointment at USC, Gómez served as the General Manager and City Librarian of the Los Angeles Public Library. Additional professional positions include service as President and CEO of the Urban Libraries Council, Executive Director of the Friends and Foundation of the San Francisco Public Library, Chief Executive of the Brooklyn Public Library and Library Director of the Oakland Public Library. Currently he serves on the Board of Trustees for Sesame Workshop and Poets House, both located in New York City. Gómez holds a BA in English from the University of California, Los Angeles and received his Masters in Library Science from the University of Arizona where he received the 2001 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Mark Kurtz

Director of Business Development, BioOne
Mark Kurtz is director of business development at BioOne, a nonprofit aggregation of over 165 journals in organismal, evolutionary, and integrative biology. He holds MTS and MA degrees from Harvard University, and previously served as director of publications and new media at the Archaeological Institute of America.

Brian Moura

Assistant City Manager, City of San Carlos, CA
Brian Moura is Assistant City Manager for the City of San Carlos. During his time in San Carlos, Brian has held the positions of Interim City Manager, Finance Director, Human Resources Director, Interim Parks and Recreation Director and Interim Economic Development Director concurrently with his work as the City’s Assistant City Manager. He also manages the City’s Green Programs, interdepartmental projects, the City’s Public Information and Legislation programs, economic development and technology activities for the City Manager’s Department and serves as the Acting City Manager in the City Manager’s absence. Brian is a leader in bringing technology, regionalism and government agencies together. He is also leading the City’s work in the Social Media/Web 2.0 area and has developed both Facebook and Twitter services for the City. Prior to working for the City of San Carlos, he held positions with the City of Hayward, Contra Costa County, San Mateo County Office of Education and the City/County of San Francisco in the Municipal Court. Brian has a BA Degree in Political Science from U.C. Berkeley and an MPA Degree from Cal State University, Hayward.

Frances Pinter

Executive Director, Knowledge Unlatched
Frances Pinter is the founder of Knowledge Unlatched – a not-for-profit company devising and implementing new business models in the area of scholarly book length publications knowledgeunlatched.org. She was the founding Publisher of Bloomsbury Academic and ran the Churchill Archive digitisation project. Frances is a visiting fellow at both the Big Innovation Centre and the London School of Economics. Previously she was Publishing Director at the Soros Foundation (Open Society Foundation) working in 30 transition countries supporting publishing development after the fall of communism. In the late 90s she established EIFL, a library consortium that now straddles nearly 50 countries. Earlier in her career she founded Pinter Publishers that also owned Leicester University Press and established the imprint Belhaven Press.  She holds a BA from New York University and a PHD from University College, London.

Tom Sanville

Senior Director, Library Services, LYRASIS
Tom Sanville has served as the Senior Director, Library Services at LYRASIS since April 2010, where he is responsible for overseeing the management and development of relationships with all third-party vendors, digitization and preservation programs, and technology-based and proprietary services. Prior to joining LYRASIS, he was the Executive Director of OhioLINK, serving 89 member and participating institutions with a union catalog equipped with a statewide patron-initiated borrowing system, over 100 reference and research databases, and cooperative statewide electronic centers for theses and dissertations, journals, books, and digital media. He holds a B.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
