Ginnie Cooper
Chief Librarian, District of Columbia Public Library
In July 2006, Ginnie Cooper joined the District of Columbia Public Library as Chief Librarian. The Library Board hired her to transform DCPL. A librarian since 1970, Cooper is a past president of the Public Library Association and a recipient of the Charlie Robinson Award which recognizes a public library director who is a risk-taker, an innovator and an agent for change. She believes in the power of public libraries to make a difference in the lives of individuals and in communities.
Robert Darnton
Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the Harvard University Library
Robert Darnton completed an AB at Harvard and a doctorate at Oxford. After a short stint as a newspaper reporter, he was a junior fellow at Harvard, then taught history at Princeton until 2007, when he came to Harvard as director of the university library. Of his recent books, the one most likely to interest readers concerned with the DPLA is “The Case for Books: Past, Present, and Future.”

Nancy Gwinn
Director, Smithsonian Libraries
Dr. Nancy E. Gwinn has been at the Smithsonian since 1984 and became Director of the Smithsonian Libraries in 1997. She is a recognized leader in international librarianship, the preservation of library collections and the application of library technologies, and for building collaborations and partnerships. At the Smithsonian, Gwinn’s achievements include launching the Libraries’ exhibition program, creating the web site “Galaxy of Knowledge,” expanding the Libraries rare book and electronic collections, establishing a Digital Library, and creating the first SIL Advisory Board and fund-raising program to support programs and services. During her tenure, the Smithsonian Libraries initiated and became the lead partner in establishing the digital Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) and houses and staffs the program’s secretariat. She currently serves as Chair of the BHL Steering Committee and Institutional Council. Gwinn recently completed a six-year term on the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Governing Board, including a two-year term as chair of IFLA’s Professional Committee. She is a member of the jury of the IFLA International Marketing Award and is the American Library Association representative on the Executive Board of the US Committee of the Blue Shield.
Susan Hildreth
Director of the Institute for Museum and Library Services
On January 19, 2011, President Obama appointed Susan Hildreth to be director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The nomination to her new post was confirmed by the US Senate by unanimous consent on December 22, 2010. Hildreth is the former city librarian of Seattle, where she managed the Seattle Public Library, which includes the world-renowned Central Library, 26 new and expanded branches, and a Mobile Services division.
Deanna Marcum
Managing Director, Ithaka S+R
As Managing Director of Ithaka S+R, Deanna Marcum leads the research and consulting services that assist universities and colleges, libraries, publishers, and cultural institutions as they make the transition to the digital environment. She heads a staff of 10 program directors and analysts with wide-ranging expertise. From 2003-2011, Deanna served as associate librarian for Library Services, Library of Congress. She previously served as Director of Public Service and Collection Management at the Library of Congress and Dean of the School of Library and Information Science at The Catholic University of America.
Andrew McLaughlin
Executive Director, Civic Commons & Lecturer in Law, Stanford Law School
Andrew McLaughlin is Executive Director of Civic Commons, and a Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School, teaching a course on freedom of speech in the Internet age. Previously, Andrew served on President Obama’s White House staff as Deputy Chief Technology Officer of the U.S.; as a member of the Obama-Biden transition team; as Director of Global Public Policy at Google; and as Vice President and Chief Policy Officer of ICANN, the Internet’s technical coordinating organization.
Amy E. Ryan
President of the Boston Public Library
Amy E. Ryan became the first female president of the Boston Public Library in 2008. Amy Ryan has over 30 years of public library management experience. Prior to becoming President of the Boston Public Library, she was the Director of the nationally recognized Hennepin County Library in Minnesota from 2005 to 2008. Prior to that, Ms. Ryan served in leadership positions over 28 years with Minneapolis Public Library.
Maureen Sullivan
Educator, consultant and American Library Association President-elect
Maureen Sullivan is a widely recognized leader, educator and consultant in the library profession. She is a professor of practice in the Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions PhD program at Simmons College and is on the faculty of the Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is the current president-elect of the American Library Association.
Doron Weber
Vice President, Programs at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Doron Weber oversees efforts in Public Understanding of Science and Technology, Universal Access to Knowledge and International Science Cooperation. A sponsor of books, television documentaries and radio shows, Mr. Weber created a nationwide theater and film program. In Digital Information Technology, Mr. Weber supports the Digital Public Library of America, Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, the Library of Congress and the Espresso Book Machine. A new program in International Science Cooperation focuses on connecting scientists and engineers in conflict regions. Mr. Weber was educated at Brown University, the Sorbonne and Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He has authored several books, most recently a memoir, Immortal Bird, forthcoming from Simon and Schuster in February 2012.
