Great blog. Really important topic to share and talk about.
I continue to be awestruck by the amount of violence this country still doles out on its most vulnerable. One hopes that prevention efforts and info that is shared about the dangers of shaking will make a difference. It doesn't seem to be for many people.
As the author of two books on SBS (Silenced Angels: the Medical, Legal and Social Aspects of Shaken Baby Syndrome and Lilacs in the Rain: the Shocking Story of Connecticut's Shaken Baby Serial Killer), I am familiar with the amount of violence that causes injury to a baby's brain. It's terribly severe. Thanks for your blog.

Haven't seen a story like that yet...hopefully we won't but you never know.

There was an awful case here a few years ago with a foster family and their girlfriend. The gf was granted immunity for testifying/ratting on the other 2.

such sad haiku.

indeed. more information needs to get out there regarding how to deal with a crying child, and what the consequences of shaking that child might be (i just feel that the act of intentionally dropping or punching a child is pretty much indefensible.).

Very good observation, Anne. But, what about "father's boyfriend"?

Just about any time you see a story with the phrase "mother's boyfriend," it has a sad ending.

Hi, Scott. I understand that each case needs to be proven and I linked to the SBS Defense website to keep you happy. However, there have been far too many cases where the perpetrator has admitted the shaking, punching, or tossing or there have been witnesses, or injuries that simply cannot be the result of a simple fall. Here, in the Capital Region, a lot of guys in the news are actually punching infants. It's sad.

At the CLE I did last week, another speaker did a SBS lecture. What I was surprised to learn was how the myth surrounding SBS has overcome medical realities.

We need to be cautious not to jump to SBS assumptions; while it is a terrible problem, sometimes a child just falls and gets hurt. Our love and concern for children pushes us to rush to judgment on shaken baby syndrome.
