“Whatever the results of the police investigation may be, the incident throws some light on the other face of the suburb of Prenzlauer Berg. It also becomes clear that Berlin’s problem is not simply the parts of the city that are – allegedly or in fact – dangerous. Berlin’s problem is also the growing social division of the capital: unemployment and old-age poverty are proliferating, already run-down housing is falling apart, young people see no future for themselves, and a new underclass is growing up, all in direct proximity to the latest, hottest clubs, the designer boutiques, and the luxury penthouses.”

„Was immer die Ermittlungen ergeben, der Vorfall wirft ein Licht auf das zweite Gesicht des Vorzeigestadtteils Prenzlauer Berg. Und da zeigt sich: Berlins Problem sind nicht nur vermeintlich oder wirklich gefährliche Gegenden, es ist die zunehmende soziale Spaltung der Stadt. Unweit der angesagten Clubs, der Designergeschäfte und Luxusdachgeschosse wuchern Arbeitslosigkeit und Altersarmut, gammeln marode Wohnungen und perspektivlose Jugendliche, wächst eine neue Unterschicht.“
