Exploitation at German Universities, but Not, Surely Not, at the Technical University of Munich – 13
(NOTE: One additional factor in this question of compensation is the all-important German social security pension for retirees, which is relatively generous one.)
“Dr. Sabine Todt, temporary German university instructor, working without pay: ‘The whole structure of university education in Germany is organized so that you start earning money (towards your social security pension) later in life, but then you earn more than other people, so that you make up for the “missing” years when you were at university and earned nothing. But the way things are with instructors like me, all of that doesn’t hold true any more.’
“Reporter: ‘How can it be that people teach basic courses at the university for nothing, not just in individual cases, but as a general rule?’
“Joerg Draeger, Education Senator for the City of Hamburg: ‘. . . You’re portraying these volunteer instructors in a very negative light. We have attorneys from highly respected law firms teaching here for nothing, because they have the feeling they want to pass on their knowledge. For them it’s not a question of forty euros an hour, but they say: “I have a good job, and so I’ll do this.” And there are others who do it in order to further their own research capabilities and knowledge, so that later they can become honorary professors, or something. We also have people like that. Basically, I don’t find anything negative about a deeply committed volunteer’.”

„Sabine Todt, Lehrbeauftragte: ‚Letztlich ist die akademische Ausbildung ja darauf ausgerichtet, dass man sehr viel später verdient und dann eigentlich ein bisschen besser, so dass man dann die Rentenabsicherung wieder hinkriegt, diese fehlenden Jahre davor. Und das ist nicht mehr gegeben.’
Reporterin: ‚Wie kann es sein, dass Grundlagenveranstaltungen an der Universität umsonst abgehalten werden? Kein Einzelfall, sondern generell …’
Jörg Dräger, Wissenschaftssenator Hamburg: ‚… Sie stellen ehrenamtliches Engagement als so negativ dar. Wir haben hier Anwälte von hoch dekorierten Kanzleien, die Lehraufträge umsonst machen, weil sie das Gefühl haben, ihr Wissen auch weiter geben zu wollen und denen es halt nicht auf den Vergütungssatz von 40 Euro die Stunde ankommt, sondern die sagen: Ich habe einen guten Job, ich mach das. Und es gibt andere, die zu ihrer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Weiterbildung anstreben, Lehraufträge zu geben, um später mal eine Ehrenprofessur zu bekommen oder ähnliches. Auch das haben wir. Ich empfinde nichts Negatives grundsätzlich am engagierten Ehrenamt’.”
