Bettina Reichart, first-year student at the University of Munich, says, “The term ‘elite’ has become a kind of standard expression among us. In a seminar, if there’s nothing for the teacher to write on the board with, or if part of the ceiling is missing in a classroom, or if the only seats free in a lecture hall are on the floor, our reaction is, ‘Well, you see? This is our elite university!’” It’s all meant to be good-natured ridicule, but one thing is clear: the problems that exist at almost every university in the country are also part of the daily routine at the “elite” institutions.

»Bei uns an der Uni ist das mittlerweile zum geflügelten Wort geworden, das mit der Elite«, sagt Bettina Reichart, die Münchner Studienanfängerin. »Wenn im Seminar keine Stifte vorn an der Tafel liegen, wenn in einem Raum die Deckenverkleidung fehlt oder man in der Vorlesung wieder nur einen Platz auf dem Boden gekriegt hat, dann sagen wir schnell: ›Na, da sieht man’s – das ist also unsere Elite-Uni!‹« Es ist ein gutmütiger Spott, aber eines zeigt er sehr deutlich: Die üblichen Probleme, die es an fast jeder Universität gibt, gehören auch bei den Eliteeinrichtungen zum Alltag.
