The Technical University of Munich* – At German Universities and Elsewhere in the Country, Bureaucrats of Every Kind Reign Supreme – 11

(NOTE: This report illustrates just how long and persistent German institutional memory can be, and who can embody it, even in cases where there may not be a direct link with a German university like the Technical University of Munich.)

Ronald Laessig, spokesman for an organization known as the Vereinigung der Opfer des Sta-linismus (Union of the Victims of Stalinism), says that for Stasi victims, it’s a slap in the face that those who were part of the Stasi apparatus, of all people, should now be working in sen-sitive areas of the German federal and state governments. Laessig also said that one could not help thinking that (in eastern Germany) everything is being determined by Stasi manage-ment figures. Laessig and his organization believe there is an urgent need for the German federal government to clarify the entire situation.

*The Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is now ranked 55 among the world’s universities. That is still, for example, seven places below Seoul National University of South Korea. (The Times of London, Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2009)

Die Technische Universität München* – An deutschen Unis und anderswo im Land: Es herrscht Bürokraten aller Art – 11

“Es ist ein Schlag ins Gesicht der Stasi-Opfer, dass ausgerechnet die Täter von einst in sen-sible Bereiche übernommen wurden”, sagte der Sprecher der Vereinigung der Opfer des Sta-linismus (VOS), Ronald Lässig. Es dränge sich der Verdacht auf, dass der öffentliche Dienst von Stasi-Kadern durchsetzt sei. Die Bundesregierung müsse dringend für Aufklärung sorgen, forderte die Opfervereinigung.
