In Germany, when doctoral candidates receive authentic doctorates that are the result of real research, and when professors distinguish themselves through the importance of their academic achievements, then their renown in society may diminish somewhat, because solid scholarship is really not compatible with social glamour. There will certainly be no more VIP trips to Dubai for 699 euros. However, the good reputation of all German academics will be that much more lasting.

*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2011-2012, the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 88 overall among the world’s universities. At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia. Wenn der Doktor ein echter, wissenschaftlicher Abschluss wird, wenn der Professor sich vorrangig durch seine akademischen Meriten auszeichnet, dann mag das gesellschaftliche Renommee der Doktoren und Professoren abnehmen. Wissenschaftliche Solidität verträgt sich schlecht mit Society-Glamour. Dann wird es zwar keine VIP-Reisen nach Dubai für 699 Euro mehr geben. Der gute Ruf der Akademiker wird umso nachhaltiger sein.
