The Technical University of Munich* – In Wurzburg, Germany, You Can Just Pay a Professor to Write Your Dissertation – 9
In that summer of 2005, Keil was seventy-one. He considered himself the epitome of an influential man at the zenith of his career. He had just recently supervised his two hundred and fiftieth dissertation, an incredible number. “He went around trading on that figure everywhere,” said one retired professor, who had been a member of the same department. This professor added that at the time, the only thing that counted for Keil was fame, his place in university history. But then Keil’s successor, Professor Michael Stolberg, discovered a whole series of dissertations that seemed unusual. Stolberg suspected that Keil had written these dissertations himself, “because the wording, the diction, and the style were all those of Professor Keil,” as Stolberg states in the minutes of a university meeting that this newspaper has had access to. The doctoral candidates involved were all physicians and dentists, some of whom had been in practice for decades and very few of whom had any connection with the University of Wurzburg – much less with the Department of the History of Medicine – until they received their doctorates. In return, according to university documents, these physicians and dentists had made contributions to non-profit organizations run by Professor Keil.

In jenem Sommer 2005, Keil ist 71, wähnt sich der einflussreiche Mann auf dem Zenit seiner Karriere. Erst kürzlich hat er seine 250. Dissertation betreut, eine unglaubliche Zahl. »Er ist damit überall hausieren gegangen«, sagt ein emeritierter Professor der Fakultät. Für Keil habe in dieser Zeit nur noch der Ruhm gezählt, der Eintrag in die Geschichtsbücher. Doch dann entdeckt sein Nachfolger, Professor Michael Stolberg, eine ganze Reihe von Dissertationen, die ihm ungewöhnlich vorkommen. Er vermutet, dass Keil sie selbst verfasst hat, »weil sie nach dem Wortlaut des Textes weitgehend der Diktion und dem Stil von Prof. Keil entsprächen«, wie es in einem universitären Sitzungsprotokoll heißt, das der ZEIT vorliegt. Die Doktoranden, allesamt Ärzte und Zahnärzte, die zum Teil schon seit Jahrzehnten im Beruf stehen und von denen die wenigsten bis zur Promotion eine Verbindung zur Uni Würzburg, geschweige denn zur Medizingeschichte hatten, sollen sich internen Schreiben zufolge mit Spenden an von Professor Keil betriebene gemeinnützige Vereine revanchiert haben.
