The Technical University of Munich* – “Help! The Universities (in Germany) Are Falling Apart!” – 13

What that means is this: for the time being, the states cannot count on additional funding from the German federal government. It will be up to the finance ministers in the individual states to decide how much any planned renovations are worth to them. What the universities are now afraid of is that while they’re waiting for decisions, more offices will be buried under rubble and dust.

*According to The Times of London, in its Higher Education Supplement [THES], World University Rankings, 2012-2013, (http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2013-14/world-ranking) the Technical University of Munich, officially recognized by the German government as an “elite university,” is ranked 87 overall among the world’s universities. At its current ranking, the Technical University of Munich is not so very far behind many universities in, for example, East Asia. It is now only thirty-seven places behind China’s Tsinghua University (ranked 50 in the world), only thirty places behind the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (ranked 57 in the world), only forty-two places behind Peking University (ranked 45 in the world), only sixty-one places behind the National University of Singapore (ranked 26 in the world), only twenty-seven places behind Korea’s Pohang University of Science and Technology (ranked 60 in the world), and, for another comparison, only eighty-two places behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (ranked 5 in the world). Die Technische Universität München* – „Hilfe, die Uni stürzt ein!“ – 13

Das bedeutet: Mit mehr Geld vom Bund können die Länder vorerst nicht rechnen. Es müssen also die Finanzminister der Länder entscheiden, wie viel ihnen die Sanierungen wert sind. Die Befürchtung an vielen Hochschulen ist: Bis es zu Entscheidungen kommt, sind bereits die nächsten Büros unter Schutt und Staub begraben.
