The Minister of Thought

Will Brazil embrace the ideas of Roberto Unger?

Fabio Pozzebom/ABR

Roberto Unger (right) has criticized Brazil’s President “Lula” (left). But they are working together.

Two years ago, HLS Professor Roberto Unger LL.M. ’70 S.J.D. ’76 publicly denounced the government of his native Brazil, calling it “the most corrupt in history.” He also called for the impeachment of its president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, known throughout Brazil as “Lula.”

In June, Unger took a job as a minister in Lula’s Cabinet, in charge of the secretariat for long-term planning. (more…)

Some Good Chinese Movies

Filed under: China, In English, entertainment, life — Rui Guo @ 8:04 pm

Crazy Stone (2006)

Farewell My Concubine (1993)

In the Heat of the Sun (1995)

Platform (2000)

Mahjong (1996)

Shaolin Temple (1982)

Maybe to add some cartoon movies:

Baby Tadpoles Look for Their Mother (1960);

The Monkey King (1964).

The following two are just for fun. In 2005 Chen Kaige shot Wuji, which cost a huge amount of money but turned out to be a really crappy one. A netizen used some of his movie clips to make a humorous story named A Story of Murder Originated from A Piece of Bread, and then posted it on internet. The latter, aimed at making fun of Wuji, got millions of clicking from China and abroad. Chen was mad at the netizen and even threatened him with a litigation.

Wuji (2005); and a response video

A Story of Murder Originated from A Piece of Bread (2005) (19 minutes)

These films demonstrates the power of Chinese propaganda:

The Great Decisive War I, II, and III (1991).

You can find all these movies by simply copying and googling them. Enjoy, my friends.

Economist: An old Chinese myth

Filed under: China, In English, news — Rui Guo @ 4:15 pm

See: http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cf…

MOST people suppose that China’s economic success depends on exporting cheap goods to the rich world. If so, its growth would be seriously dented by a stuttering American economy. Headline figures show that China’s exports surged from 20% of GDP in 2001 to almost 40% in 2007, which seems to suggest not only that exports are the main driver of growth, but also that China’s economy would be hit much harder by an American downturn than it was during the previous recession in 2001. If exports are measured correctly, however, they account for a surprisingly modest share of China’s economic growth.
