About Us

The Harvard African Law Association (HALA) is a student organization at Harvard Law School (HLS). The mission of HALA is to unite African students and students interested in Africa, and increase awareness of legal, social and economic issues that shape and concern the continent of Africa.

The Harvard African Law Association was formally recognized as a graduate student organization by HLS on November 6, 2001. Prior to this time, Africa was the only region of the world for which there was no student organization at the HLS. The ever-increasing number of continental Africans in the student body of the HLS motivated the establishment of the HALA. It is hoped that HALA will also serve as the nucleus for a future HLS African alumni network.
