Division of General Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital Boston is looking for high school sophomores and juniors to participate in Opt4College, a transition opportunity for students with disabilities and special health care needs.
OPT4College is a pilot research study, within which an online curriculum was designed to facilitate the process of applying to colleges for children with disabilities and/or special healthcare needs. It is our hope that through the success of this project, the curriculum will eventually be beneficial for ALL students in the college application process. For this project we are actively recruiting high school students with disabilities and/or special healthcare needs.
The curriculum is divided into six online lessons in a video format that should take student about 15 minutes to watch. They will receive 1 lesson a month and will win free music cards and an opportunity to win an iPod in addition to the wonderful information in for participating. The lessons cover the following subjects: preparing for college while in high school (taking the right classes, getting involved in school and community), searching for the right college for you, preparing for and getting accommodations on SAT and ACT, advocating for self, getting the accommodations you need in the classroom to be successful, disability laws and rights, preparing for a more independent life, the application process, financial aid/ scholarship and preparing for college life.
We are looking for high school sophomores and juniors who have a disability that may affect their schoolwork or consider special needs when transitioning to college. We are not concerned if the student is officially diagnosed or not. Some examples of the students we are looking for include: anyone with hearing, vision and mobility limitations, learning disabilities, chronic health care conditions (ADD/ADHD, asthma, spina bifida, diabetes etc.) and mental health/ emotional concerns. Since this is an online curriculum, we are looking for students that can self-navigate through the online program.
