Harry Potter and the Porcelain Doll

Got this link from Bokane. Seems that
Chinese fans get a kick out of writing fanfiction novels of Harry coming
to China and experiencing the far east. One particular version has been
selling rather well in China it seems. Check the link for more info.

A Chinese dialect version of Jingle Bells

John over at SinoSplice dug up
a really interesting Chinese version of Jingle Bells.
The problem is WHAT particular dialect of Chinese is it? Some folks were
thinking it was Vietnamese since it was not Cantonese (and definitely not
Mandarin) but I’m sure it’s NOT Vietnamese so that leaves the piles of
dialects of China to choose from. Anyone have an idea?

Some intereting articles on linguistics

The first one is interesting since it points out a not so well known
linguist but seems like a competent guy. But then again most academics
tend to remain in obscurity except for a very few. The second article
I’m completely skeptical about.

Article 1: How many Linguists can you name?

Article 2: Writing as a Block for Asians

Too much computing == poor learning?

According to a report dug up by the Christian Science Monitor it says so.
And too much candy is bad for your tummy too.

The $100 PC, too bad you still can’t afford it

If you have been following the tech news. Steve Ballmer of Microsoft issued
a challenge to the computer industry that the world NEEDS a
$100 PC
to help cut down on piracy in emerging countries. While there’s plenty
of opinions on this. My one word stance on the matter is skeptical.

A company has stepped up and offered a $100 PC as well. You can find that
announcement here. My
first thought was, “Hey great, I’d like to buy a few for a small business
and test drive them!” However, as I read the news announcements I was
utterly disheartened to read this:

The minimum order quantity for the SolarLite is 100,000 units

Wonderful. Once again the computer industry manages to cater a solution
to huge organizations. While I can understand the economics behind
why the minimum order must be kept so high, it feels frustrating
to watch all these technology highlights without the ability to participate
in any of them. In fact MUCH of the ballyhoo in the technology industry
reminds me of this. You get to oh and awe over things but when it comes
time to actually being part of the ballgame you need to be in the major
leagues or you’re just spectator. Sort of takes the Personal out of
PC doesn’t it?

OMFG! My Laptop was stolen. Um.. duh?

Seems one of the creators of PHP got his nice shiny new laptop stolen at
a PHP conference in Paris:

My nice new T42p was stolen by some loser at a PHP conference in Paris. It is amazingly inconvenient to lose a laptop like this. It was from inside the conference hall and there was virtually no non-geek traffic there. If a fellow geek actually stole my laptop from a PHP conference then there is something seriously wrong with the world. You can steal my car, my money, my shoes, I don’t really care, but don’t steal my damn laptop!

While I definitely can understand being down about having your laptop
stolen. I’m afraid I don’t have THAT much sympathy if you consider that:

  • It’s a new laptop so it probably costs a few grand.
  • If you have some social status, the information on your laptop would be worth something to someone to highjack
  • Just because it is a geek conference does not mean there are no thieves
  • Just because laptops usage is becoming more common in public places, it does not mean that you can leave them lying around like pencils
  • Computing is at the heart of any techno-geek. Would you leave your heart lying on some table somewhere?
  • PHP/Perl/etc creators are not immune to theft

While I can sympathesize to some extent on the wrongness of the world of a
geek possibly swiping your laptop. It is well known that people will try
to steal anything that isn’t nailed down or under constant supervision…
especially expensive stuff.

Merry X-mas Foxtrot Style

Today’s Foxtrot is
very cute. It took me a little bit to figure out but it’s worth brushing
up your physics for it. It doesn’t take that much physics really.
