Is it all about the gals?

I found this new sight called Tieng Magazine
while trying to find sites on Vietnamese culture in English. I then stumbled
across this article:

As I was doing research online for Vietnamese search terms on Overture,
I noticed that the fourth most searched term when I entered in
“Vietnamese” is “Vietnamese girl”.

Glad to know that “Vietnamese girl” beats “Vietnamese food” on the Internet
search rank anyday… not. While girls are very nice (spoken from the
male perspective) I would like to think there is more to the culture than
the ladies. I guess the verdict is get better with Vietnamese if I want
more information about Vietnam.

Make no mistake about it: the primary goal of FSF is software freedom.
Producing ‘good software’ is secondary.

So much for PS2 Linux

I’ve always been interested in Linux for the PS2, especially since some
of the hardware on the PS2 had some interesting features from a graphics
standpoint. However, I just checked the
Playstation 2 Linux Website
and found this disappointing news.

US & Canada: The North American territory is now sold out of Linux for PlayStation 2.

Linux for PlayStation 2 final release 1.0 was sold as a DVD set only in Japan, for users who had already purchased the hardware with the Beta kit release in 2001. All final release 1.0 discs have been sold, and there are no plans for further sales in Japan

In other words, if you don’t have one, don’t even bother looking for one.
Ah well. Guess I’ll just wait for the PS3 and hope they have something
for tinkerers.

Vietnam through a Vietnamese-American eyes

I always find it interesting to hear the myriad of voices of the slice of
Asian-Americans that are known as Vietnamese-Americans. I have many
mixed thoughts on this. I think it would be beneficial to me to sit
down and try to verbalize these many thoughts in a coherent fashion.

However, someone else has done a good job of verbalizing hers.
It’s a very interesting insight into perhaps many other Asian-american’s
thoughts. I can understand why many Asian-americans roll their eyes
when strangers bring up the topic of their country of origin as a
conversation topic. In fact, I bet if you look at many expats in
Asia they got bombarded with the same questions from strangers and get
REALLY tired of it. What goes around comes around, one would say?

However, for Vietnamese people who do not claim Vietnam as their home
country because they are Americans, French, or Canadians, etc.
the Vietnam War is an invisible mark they must bear when they confront
any stranger. It’s an invisible topic that always lurks in the background.
However, many of these folk are Americans, French,
Canadians or whatever just as much as anyone else that makes their home
in those respective countries. So, it’d be nice to try to get to know these
people first as a PERSON rather than as the cultural representative to
an event in history.

A most excellent presentation on projections

Happy New Year’s and all that. To kick off the New Year’s I give you
a link from Remote Sensing
about map projections. This is a very nice overview of map projections
with excellent pictures to illustrate many of the jargon terms that
people in the GIS and geopgraphy field toss around. I can
finally visualize in my mind what a geoid and datum is.
