Throwing Sand in Filtering’s Gears: Psiphon, CitizenLab, and ONI
The Toronto Star has a great story today covering work by Nart Villeneuve, Ron Deibert, and Michael Hull (at University of Toronto’s CitizenLab) on Psiphon, a circumvention tool designed to allow users in repressive states (think Burma, Iran, or China) to access on-line material that the government blocks. Nart is Director of Technical Research, and Ron is a principal investigator, for the OpenNet Initiative. Their work documenting the material that states censor on the Net, and the methods employed to do so, is important and rigorous. I’m proud to count them as colleagues and friends. Update: I managed to mis-spell Michael’s name; I corrected it and apologize!
