Gone are the days when the Internet was reserved only for geeky Harvard cyberspace types. A while back I wrote about my visit to Blackpool and during my trip to the UK I did quickly surf the web for some ideas on where to go while I was there. We had a rental car so were able to drive around much of the north of England if we wanted and while I was online I found a website which gave me lots of good ideas for places to go.

We looked through their holiday guides in the travel section and found that Liverpool was another city that was of interest to us and it was not too long a drive to get there. When we returned to the States we told everyone all about our adventures and it just so happens that one of our best friend’s daughters was planning a trip to England herself, not for a holiday but to spend some time working in London. These will be for the purpose of tourism in most cases but also for the English speaking population of these countries. After all, you can’t beat local knowledge when looking for things in a foreign land.

I wanted to add this post to my blog so I kept a written account while on one of my vacations this summer.

We had a blast in Blackpool. The Pleasure Beach was awesome with the Pepsi Max Big One and Valhalla being my favorites but of course my partner preferred the more sedate rides like Alice in Wonderland. On the Tuesday it was a bit drizzly so we spent the day in Blackpool Tower and here we saw the best show in town – Mooky and his Circus.

The finale there was spectacular (though I won’t tell you about it here – it would spoil it for you). The Tower is a splendid example of Victorian architecture and the ballroom has to be seen. The tower, we learned, is 518 feet high and actually sways 6 inches on a windy day. Some great cabaret shows in town: Funny Girls (a bit different), Legends was a great “Stars in Your Eyes” type of cabaret. We were lucky to pick a good week, weather wise.

Went to the Zoo on Thursday. Another great day – animals looked really well cared for and …happy. A stroll back through Stanley Park on our way home where we stopped at the boating lake and had ice creams. Neighbouring Stanley Park is Blackpool Park golf course. I didn’t take any clubs but I would have loved to play the course as it was designed by Scott Mackenize – the same designer of Augusta Golf Club (US Masters) and the first hole looked a carbon copy of Augusta.

We stayed at The Canasta Hotel and can recommend this Blackpool Hotel to everybody young and old alike. Massive choice at breakfast included the traditional English “fry-up” but we could also choose from Kippers and Haddock as well as tons of toast, and as much English tea and coffee as we could drink. We definitely didn’t need any snacks during the day after that. Rooms comfortable and clean (though I would have preferred a larger room – next time we come I will book a larger one). Fantastic value though and we made good friends with the owners Dougie and “Swampy”. We loved Blackpool and this was our favorite part of our UK tour. The 6 nights seemed to whizz by so fast. We’ll definitely be coming back and will definitely be using the Canasta Hotel again. My marks for Blackpool and the Canasta – ten out of ten!
