Student Credit Cards

Student Credit Cards Information

I wanted to write about something that is near and dear to me in my life. Credit, mainly how to find it, use it, and help fixing your credit report, or whatever else I can think of along the way. I have been there and done it and maintain a B+ credit score. So we all know about student credit cards and how they are supposed to be bad for students, well that is narrow minded thinking and here’s why.

The first step to build credit in a student’s life could be to check out the various credit card offers on the net to find out what is available to them. Most students are interested in establishing credit in their own name rather than using their parents’ or guardians’ credit cards. Responsible use of credit cards can enable students to charge purchases to cover extra school, and living expenses while in college. Most students have either part time or full time jobs that will provide the funds to make monthly payments. Most consumer credit card counseling sites encourage students to make more than the minimum monthly required payment. Making more than the minimum payment will place students in the habit of paying off debt in a faster method. Holding onto credit balances too long will incur hefty interest charges and increase balances, even when not making purchases.

Many online sites are available to apply for student credit cards. Some sites offer unbiased information with several different companies that sponsor student credit cards. These sites give acceptable interest rates and advice on the use of student credit cards, and budgeting for payments. Being responsible enough to own and use a student credit card is developed from the inception of the line of credit. Irresponsible spending will result in not being able to afford payments and mounting balances that become overwhelming. Students should consult with their parents, guardians, or consumer credit counselors to advise them about sound charging habits.

Credit Consistency

A pattern needs to be developed with student credit card users, of being in a position to charge and pay off their
debt in a reasonable time frame. Establishing good credit takes planning and good purchasing decisions. Using a
credit card can give an unrealistic sense of financial freedom. Students need to have a mentor while using a
credit card until a good pattern of charging and paying has been established. After a lengthy period of following
good credit practices, the mentor may be relied on less frequently. Wise consumers use credit cards on an as
needed basis. Need versus want is studied in classes beginning with the elementary level of schooling. College
students using credit cards need to remain grounded about the basics of need versus want.

It is both challenging and exciting to enter the world of purchasing on credit. Reaching the golden age of being
considered for credit card approval is a responsibility that needs to be considered with financial education. Some
students may use a debit card to make purchases which comes from their checking account. Larger purchases may be
considered through using store accounts. A student credit card is a valuable asset when used in moderation and
with the guidance of appropriate counsel. Enter the world of using credit cards by establishing appropriate
spending and bill paying methods to keep credit ratings in good standing.
