RK Anand asks Sikhs to Bury the Past

A day after Indian Express published Manoj Mitta’s article on the role of Congress candidate RK Anand in defending the perpetrators of the pogroms against Sikhs in November 1984, RK Anand defended the role of the Delhi Administration and apologized for the carnage.  However, despite the impunity granted to perpetrators of the carnage, he asked the Sikh community to bury the past:

I offer an apology to the Sikh community on behalf of the Congress party and for my self for the 1984 riots…Our party has apologised to the Sikhs even before but I want this matter to be buried. It happened 20 years back and why should it be raked up again? The BJP is bringing it up again for political gains but they will not succeed…

I regret the injustice done to the Sikhs. But it is the past. Let us bury it. Let us not use it for political purposes. It is very unfortunate that such a thing ever happened.

The survivors, however, have consistently described their desire for justice and their feelings of hopelessness over the lack of it.  No senior politician or police officer consistently cited by witnesses and victims has been punished for his role in perpetrating the massacre.

I think the sheer cheek of this politician is self-evident. Do these people have no shame! If lessons are not learned from history then it is destined to be repeated; no matter how deep you ‘bury it’.

Anand had no role in the 1984 riots. This was a badly researched article which was intentionally published to encite the sikh comunity. We should stop fuling the fire.
