Special Investigation in Gujarat Nears End; Charges Framed Against Best Bakery Accused

Soon after ordering the arrest of a Sub-Inspector of police for his role in the Ambica Society massacre during the 2002 Gujarat pogroms of Muslims, Indian Police Service officer Neerja Gotru was asked to conclude her probe:
Neerja Gotru, Ahmedabad’s SP (Prohibition) who on the Supreme Court’s direction was assigned investigation of three post-Godhra riot cases in the Panchmahals, has been asked to wind up her probe.
Confirming that she had been told to submit her report, she said: ‘‘It is a sensitive matter. The investigations are nearly over. I have been asked to submit the probe report.’’
In other Gujarat news, charges were framed in the Best Bakery retrial:
Sixteen Hindus have been charged in a court in the Indian city of Bombay (Mumbai) with the murder of 12 Muslims during the Gujarat riots in 2002.
The accused have pleaded not guilty and the trial will begin on 4 October….
India’s Supreme Court ordered a retrial after a Gujarat court acquitted the 16 and five others when key witnesses withdrew their evidence.
The five others accused in the case have still not been arrested.
