OPML river of news aggregator/newsreader at OPMLsearch

November 16th, 2005 · Comments Off

OPMLsearch is a place to discover new sources and people, and the community is growing fast.

                                         —————————–

One of the most useful new features is the built-in newsreader/aggregator.

You can explore an OPML reading list in a Dave-Winer-style “river of news” newsreader/aggregator in one click.

Browse in directory fashion this reading list by Alex Barnett, Seattle Mind Camp

Read this reading list in a river of news aggregator, in one click.

                                         —————————–

Once you are in the browse directory view, you can with one click choose to read the top five current posts in any RSS source that is included to in the directory.

With one click you can subscribe to an RSS source (in this case Barnett’s blog) in your Yahoo, Bloglines or other newsreader.

                                         —————————–

One way to think about this newsreader is that it provides a “pre-aggregator” or an “aggregator pre-processor” where you can explore the worlds of OPML reading lists and RSS sources, and then more permanently subscribe to those you really really like..

You now can create a personal list of reading lists (in OPML editor or OPML manager, of course), and visit specific reading lists as your interests lead..  OPML search will keep each of the underlying reading lists updated, and will deliver fresh RSS content to you when you decide to read from a particular list..

                                         —————————–

In the future we will share OPML, cut and paste OPML, and get our search results in OPML. The relationship of person to aggregator wil change.

Tired: An aggregator as a fixed repository of giant, OPML-based, largely-static blogrolls.

Wired:  An aggregator as a service for exploring and unpacking a particular world of knowledge expressed in a specific OPML outline–which is of interest in this moment.
