Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet have together given and pledged more to help the poor of the world than anyone in history before them. This is a remarkable and critical contribution. In my own discussions with those in the public health field, including the dean of Harvard’s School of Public Health, there is tremendous respect and gratitude for what the Gates Foundation is accomplishing.
But consider that Buffet’s pledge to the Gates foundation is 5% per year on about $30B, or about $1.5B per year. The Gates foundation has already been given by Bill and Melinda Gates about $29.1B. Most foudations spend about 5% per year of assets, which would, once again, be about $1.5B per year, plus or minus. With this amount, most observers believe that the Gates Foundation has accomplished a world of good.
But to put these amounts in perspective, the US taxpayers have spent–not invested, but spent–like drawing money from your ATM–about $320B on the Iraq war This is ten times the total amount that the Gates Foundation has in TOTAL ASSETS, and thus vastly more per year than the foundation spends in its work on behalf of the poor. The amount spent–spent–on the Iraq war could have ENDOWED ten Gates Foundations.
The $320B–that is, three hundred and twenty billion dollars–could have been invested in something else. Indeed, almost anything else would have been a better use of the money.
How about education in the United States. Dividing the $320B into the number of states, that would be $6B–that is, six billion dollars–per state. Over a few years. Would that have made a difference in our children’s lives? Yes. Would that have helped the nation’s companies develop educational technology rather than war-fighting technology? Yes. Might that in turn have helped turn us into an educational technology supplier to the world, rather than–as we are today–one of the largest arms dealers?
This all from “the education president.” Oh yea, I forgot, he is now “the war presdent.” You bet your bottom dollar! Hell, this money could have been invested in golf courses and we would all be better off.
Here is a recent summary story of spending for the war, in case you’d like to read it. The dollar amounts are discussed in a report on congress passing a new multi-billion-dollar bill of spending for the war, this week. Here is an excerpt:
Under the law, $65.8 billion will be rushed to the Pentagon so it can continue fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan through
September.
Glad they could “rush” it over! How do you suppose they do that? By armored truck? Or wire transfer?
“I am pleased that Congress has addressed these urgent
national priorities within the spending limits I set,” Bush
said as the Senate passed the measure.
Congress is also advancing separate legislation adding an
additional $50 billion in war funds to keep combat operations
running from October through March or so.
Oh yea, and here is the best part. All our Senators but one voted for the new money! In part this is because the bill combined Hurricane relief with the Iraq war..but then again, who do you suppose constructed the bill in such a politically adept way? The same Senators. This way, the “doves” can say they were forced into voting for the war in order to help the poor folks in New Orleans, and the “hawks” can show they voted to “support the troops.” Oh yea, and “chicken hawks” like Hillary Clinton can play it either way, depending upon the audience and the time. And you don’t think politicians are smart? Think again.
the Bush administration on notice that it would have to improve
its budget planning for the high cost of the Iraq war, which is
nearing $320 billion.
I am not making this stuff up. I’m SOOO glad that our Senate put the administration “on notice” that it would have to improve its budget planning. Wow. LOL
This remarkable story is just in.
Warren Buffet has long said that after his death most of his fortune would be given to charity.
Now he has decided to start giving away immediately. With about 5% per year going to five foundations, with the largest share going to the foundation of his friends Bill and Melinda Gates.
The Gates foundation has received accolades as the best led and managed of the non-profits. It has a focus on the 4 billion poorest citizens of the world, and especially has addressed child health, healing childhood diseases, and developing treatments, cures and vaccines for childhood diseases that are prevalent in the poorest parts of the world.
to address the world’s most challenging inequities, and we are humbled
that he has chosen to direct a large portion of it to the Bill &
Melinda Gates Foundation,” Bill and Melinda Gates said.
The Gates Foundation is the largest in the world, with assets just over $29.1 billion.
Buffet plans to give a total of 10 million class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Gates Foundation. The shares sold for $3,071 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday. Thus the gift to the Gates Foundation is worth $30 billion in today’s purchasing power. With about 5% transferred per year, the value of this gift could increase if Berkshire Hathaway continues to be a successful fund.
Edge 2.0 public aggregator on Top Ten Sources
June 24th, 2006
I just started an Edge 2.0 aggregator here. I only have three items, but it will grow. The most fun is the first, based on the Global Voices Online breaking news RSS feed.
Update: now I have six items and love the site–I may make it my home page!
Web 2.0 and/or Edge 2.0 tools: The New Social Aggregators: Top Ten Sources favorites versus Technorati faves
June 24th, 2006
New social aggregators offer you the favorite sources of a person, with current content..by way of RSS. Ideally these sites can enhance our access to the long-tail of blogging, helping us find quality, freshness, and novelty.
Arianna Huffington on TopTenSources click here

Arianna Huffington on Technorati click here

One of the most interesting new categories of Edge 2.0 web sites are “social aggregators”–where one is encouraged to make a public aggregator and share it with others. The total collection of social aggregators becomes, ideally, a relatively spam-free environment for searching for interesting content that has been vetted by friends and community members. This category of site is just starting to evolve. Two of special interest are TopTenSources.com, and the “faves” service of venerable Technorati.
Both are using established celebrities, such as Arianna Huffington, above, to advertise their services. I am not sure this is exactly in the spirit of Edge 2.0. After all, does WikiPedia advertise famous contributors? No. But in any case each of these services provides a powerful, free and widely available platform for individuals of all stripes and sizes to post one or more collections of sources. FYI at TopTenSources you are encouraged to create as many pages as you want.
Here are screen shots of the sign-up pages for TopTenSources and for Technorati faves, if you would like to try your hand:

Edge 2.0. Consider that NetFlicks makes accessible 60,000 DVD titles, and promotes the long tail of film content, and feeds our insatiable desire to explore, to engage new people, to be curious. NetFlicks gives us access to the “edge”–to each other, to variety. NetFlicks is the opposite of Comcast’s “On-demand” of a few titles.
Can we work to create and support more NetFlicks-like models of indexing the web? These are so-called “long tail” models, which make available the rare, the excellent, the focused, but not necessarily the most popular items.
Can we fight our way beyond the echo chamber of celebrity, and meet some new people? In my last post I spok of the fight against the powerlaw of blogging celebrity, in this post I focus on enhancing the edge.
Edge communities
Dave Winer (archive) is fond of saying that “in blogging it is not how many people read your blog, but who reads your blog.” Blogs are a way, first and foremost, to link folks together into new forms of conversation and interachange of ideas. If a small community grows up around a blog or a ring of blogs, that might actually change the world. Ideas can be shared, a group mind can emerge, and sometimes a new insight of great beauty or power can be borne..If only Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld had a little private blog ring that had a few women in it…they might get some new ideas..
I began going to Africa a few years ago, and I was stunned at the pervasiveness of instant messaging and especially of ICQ. In the following years I got to know Yossi Vardi, of ICQ, and have been converted to his philosophy. “The most powerful force on earth is people’s desire to communicate with each other. Nothing can block this.” Any application type that enables communication is bound to succeed. IM, VOIP, blogging: all bound to succeed. Why? Because these applications shorten the links between people, they enable bridges to be constructed among social networks that have hitherto been isolated from each other. They increase the total world capacity for civility: social permission to reach out to each other, a sense of the continuous intimate presence of people physically and perhaps psychically far away, and instantaneous sharing of perceptions.
Powerlaw of celebrity
But what cuts against this trend is the powerlaw of celebrity. Powerlaw and celebrity trade away quality for popularity and simplicity.
Celebrity is convenient. Why get to know many people, when you can get to “know” a few like, say–Jennifer Aniston!! And always have someone to think about, talk about, fantisize about…
Celebrity provides rallying points. George Bush, Al Gore, Anne Coulter. Convenient, clear and edgy–if not exactly subtle or discerning.
Google Page Rank is based on a form of celebrity. Technorati is based on celebrity. Memeorandum is based on what Web 2.0 celebrities say to each other. O’Reilly Publishing is based on making celebrities, packaging them up into exclusive conferences (the Web 2.0 conference is by invitation only), and indeed servicemarked the term Web 2.0 itself–and sending “cease and desist notices” to people on the edge with the temerity to use a term that itself connotes edge-oriented applications.
The problem with the powerlaw of celebrity is that it sets up barriers to those on the edge. It creates second class citizens who are not tops on Google, who do not get invited to speak at Web 2.0 the O’Reilly conference.
The problem of the powerlaw of celebrity is as profound in its own way as any other form of “the rich get richer.” Ethan Zuckerman has documented how the worldwide formal media only covers news in areas where advertisers want to reach viewers, listeners, and viewers. Ever wonder why Africa gets little coverage?
In the next few weeks I plan to write about the movement toward the edge. This is a movement from celebrity to quality. This is a movement to find true experts, deep and wise voices, fun people, cultural creatives, and new ideas. This is a movement to bring out the mind-blowing variation across the planet. It is a movement to connect folks to others who share their most creative passions. It is a movement, conversely, to try to de-connect from celebrity and centralization of stars, portals, and over-simplified, stereotypical, boring opinions.
My topic is Edge 2.0: Rewiring the people to people. Rewiring media relationships through Blogs, Global Voices, reading lists, Top Ten Sources, Delicious (I know, I never can spell it either), Wikipedia, and their Edge 1.0 predecessors Craig’s List, Ebay, ICQ (There are even earlier attempts that involved seeking to take edge characters and make them celebrities–like the “outsider art” movement. I regard these efforts as worthy but not really as rewiring the world.)
See you next post.
Oh yea, if this happens to be the first commercial use of Edge 2.0 (I sort of doubt it, but it might be), here is a creative commons license to use it as you will. BTW I really think O’Reilly should offer a creative commons license to Web 2.0. It would be the Edge 2.0 thing to do.

Marshall Kirkpatrick at OPMLSearch
June 20th, 2006
If one starts with a simple OPML file,
and puts in in the right hosting environment, a whole network of resulting
sub-sites and alternative sorting and display formats are automatically
generated and can be quickly traversed. In addition, any of the sub-sites
can be referred to directly by their sub-site URL, which becomes a permalink to
a particular display. This auto-generation of multiple related sites is a
new approach to the web that I believe
has powerful implications..
Marshall put an OPML file into a hosting environment associated with http://OPMLWorkstation.com . His OPML file in turn pointed to three RSS files, one of which is a file based on interviews with activists. OPMLWorkstation displays OPML files with a one-click “read the RSS” button.
Clicking this button automatically establishes a permalink that can be used to display Marshall’s RSS-based
directory of his interviews, as well as a public permalink for this diplay:
http://www.opmlsearch.com/read/?RSSURL=http://netsquared.org/tags/interviews/feed
What makes the above especially cool is that Mr. Kirkpatrick in turn
embedded nice photos in the RSS, and was helpful in summarizing the interviews.
And with one click you can go directly to Marshall’s blog and to a particular entry.

Marshall Kirkpatrick: Using the RSS display in OPMLSearch to make a visual directory of your blog archive
June 18th, 2006
People are starting to figure out how to use the RSS display in
OPMLSearch to make RSS-based visual directories of their site
archives.
What is really interesting to me is that if one starts with a simple
OPML file, and puts in in the right hosting environment, a whole
network of resulting sub-sites and alternative sorting and display
formats are automatically generated and can be quickly traversed. In
addition, any of the sub-sites can be referred to directly by their
sub-site URL, which becomes a permalink to a particular display. This
autogeneration of multiple related sites is a new approach to the web
which I believe has powerful implications..
See the following example, which may or may not be fully “vertant” but seems not totally inadvertant, either:
Start with the following display of RSS, which in turn points to Marshall Kirkpatrick’s interviews with
Marshall Kirkpatrick created a diretory
http://poweropml.com/browse/Now_Does_BROWSE_Marshall_OPML/
in the free OPML authoring and hosting site, OPMLWorkstation
http://opmlworkstation.com
The mere existence of this directory, given that it pointed to an RSS
file, in turn generated a cool little visual directoy in the RSS
displayer within OPMLSearch, automatically.
Of course, what makes it especially cool is that Mr. Kirkpatrick in
turn embedded nice photos in the RSS, and was helpful in summarizing
the interviews:
