I went to the post office this morning to fill out a change of address form and found that you can now do it on-line. Convenient, if scary. The service would seem to offer endless opportunities to mess with someone’s life by forwarding their mail to Alaska. But the USPS has a safeguard: you pay a $1.00 fee to use the service, and the billing address on the credit card used has to match either your old or new address. Then they send a confirmation letter to your old address which allows you to cancel forwarding. Seems safer than the paper system, which only used the confirmation letter.

Follow-up (5/2/03): the mailman rang my doorbell for the first time today. He told me he got the change of address card. But my move is too far in the future for him to remember, so I should take my name off the mailbox when I leave. High-tech.
