Librarian Contributes to International Criminal Tribunal

I went to the spring Librarians’ Assembly at Harvard yesterday to learn about the efforts of Harvard librarians to collect international materials. I was intrigued by all three speakers, partially because I don’t know much about collecting international materials and was thrilled to learn more about it. The last librarian to speak, Andras Riedlmayer of the Fine Arts Library, fascinated me the most.

His area is Islamic art and architecture. During the Bosnian war, he began working to document the devastation in Bosnia and Kosovo. He even worked on a grant-funded project with another researcher to document the destruction of more than 300 sites. He showed us many slides of mosques that had been shelled and damaged during the war. He shared his research with the International Criminal Tribunal investigating and prosecuting Slobodan Milosevic’s war crimes. He testified before them in the spring of 2001 and is planning to testify at the Hague again next month.

    1) I don’t have contact information for most of the people I mention on this blog.
    2) It is my policy not to share contact information with people I don’t know.
    3) I sent James a private e-mail with some Harvard sources that might have contact information for Andras Riedlmayer.
