“it’s always exciting to meet librarians”

Check this out: I met Joseph Reagle of the W3C at last week’s blog meeting. The W3C does some incredible stuff that interests me, so I’m always thrilled to meet someone who works with them. What is even more incredible is that Joseph says on his blog “it’s always exciting to meet librarians” when he talked about who he met at the blog meeting. (The librarians are Vernica and me.)

All day, I’ve been working on an article about a talk I attended recently by Stephen Abram of the Special Libraries Association Branding Taskforce. Abram kept talking about how “librarians start in a hole” because of how bad our image is. He mentioned that when people find out he’s a librarian, they often groan and walk away. Abram said we all have stories like that. I certainly have mine.

It’s nice to read the opposite, especially since it is now posted in a public place. I received an e-mail from Joseph after last week’s meeting saying “Lots of librarians, cool!” but I figured no one would believe me if I told them that. And, as far as I know, Joseph’s saying that of his own free will. I certainly didn’t give him any money, goods, or services for him to type that. (Vernica?)

Wow! Someone from the W3C thinks librarians are cool! Wow! “Librarians” and “cool” in the same sentence in a positive way! Nifty!
