Anyone seen the finches?
One of my readers, Paul, asked for an update on the finches, so I’m indulging his wish (just this once) and posting it for anyone else who might be remotely interested. I haven’t seen the pair that was nesting on my balcony at work since last Friday. I guess they found another spot over the weekend or something. I did have a different pair visit on Tuesday morning, but they did not stay. There is still a small pile of birdseed on my balcony that the pigeons haven’t even found yet (luckily). I miss them horribly and am very saddened by their departure. I was really enjoying watching them build a nest and listening to their songs.
There is a pair of hawks in the area that frequently land on the building, so that may have been a factor in their move. The finches were also having a very difficult time building a nest in the light fixture. They also might have realized that the location isn’t great: there’s no easy source of nesting materials, food, or water within a reasonable flight from here because they’re on the 10th floor and have to fly down to get to anything.
The rent, even for a place in the middle of Harvard Square, was very reasonable, though. It was only a song.
