Blair & BBC fight over Iraq weapons report
Tony Blair is demanding that the BBC apologize for the reporting they have done about how the British government may have exaggerated the status of weapons in Iraq to gain support for action against Saddam Hussein and his regime. A recent investigation into the dossier by a British government committee has found that at least one claim was questionable.
I first heard the BBC questioning the British government’s intelligence about Iraq and whether they exaggerated claims of Iraqi weapons back in late May and early June. I wondered if similar allegations would arise in America, and sure enough, a few weeks ago, American news sources began looking into similar questions in American government. I think this situation is a good example of why it’s wise to get news from a variety of sources. Many of the American reports I heard or read didn’t mention the problems in the British government and presented the controversy on US soil as something new. I was puzzled by the silence about the British controversy in American news sources.
